Apr 17, 2001, 01:00 ET from Openwave Systems Inc.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. and TAIPEI, Taiwan, April 17 /PRNewswire/ --
Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based
communications infrastructure software and applications, and
KG Telecommunications Co., Ltd., Taiwan's leading telecommunication visionary
in cellular products and services, today announced that KG Telecom has

wider range of innovative mobile Internet services over its GSM 1800 MHz

which recently took a 20% stake in KG Telecom, will work with the company to
combine the successful business model and marketing expertise of i-mode-like
services with the powerful and robust Openwave(TM) Services OS WAP-based
platform. KG Telecom is the latest of NTT DoCoMo's four global partners to
employ this superior combination of content strategy and best of class

"KG Telecom and Openwave are proud to be working together to advance the
mobile Internet with the delivery of enhanced services over KG Telecom's
2.5G network," said Don Listwin, president and CEO, Openwave Systems.
"KG Telecom required that we meet their highest standards for service delivery
of a seamless changeover for this mission-critical network capability.
Openwave's world-class team, with a local focus in Taiwan, met and exceeded
requirements by providing a carrier-grade service level deployment in record
time. The Openwave Services OS platform allows KG Telecom to immediately
deliver meaningful applications for its current customers while its scalable
architecture provides a solid foundation for next generation, innovative
 services," he added.
Jimmy Yau, President and Chief Operating Officer of KG Telecom, is
confident that Openwave's advanced technology, high performance standards and
user-friendly solutions supplement his charter to make KG Telecom a decisive
leader in wireless broadband services. "We celebrate our partnership with
Openwave as it enables us to be the first in the market to provide
personalized, high quality services anywhere and anytime," Mr. Yau said.
"Openwave shares KG Telecom's vision and tradition in providing superior
quality and market-leading next generation wireless services. KG Telecom
values the importance of friendly alliances to bring the best of innovations
to their customers. With Openwave's technology, DoCoMo's wireless data
expertise, and its local market footprint, KG Telecom has the winning formula
to rapidly roll-out sophisticated i-mode like services to the fast growing,
high ARPU Taiwanese market," he added.
KG Telecom, a subsidiary of Taiwan's largest business conglomerate, KOOS
Group, is Taiwan's fastest growing cellular provider. Openwave completed the
gateway replacement in March 2001. Under the terms of the agreement, KG
Telecom licensed the Openwave(TM) Mobile Access Gateway and Openwave(TM)
Provisioning Manager. Built on an open architecture, the Mobile Access
Gateway will enable KG Telecom to rapidly deploy new revenue-generating
services while providing its subscribers a more compelling, easy-to-use and
personalized mobile Internet experience. The WAP-based Provisioning Manager
enables KG Telecom to centrally manage its provisioning and administration
functions, thereby improving efficiency in customer and network management
while significantly lowering its operating costs. In addition, KG Telecom is
expected to deploy the next generation Openwave Mobile Access Gateway 5.0,
which brings support for GPRS networks, and increased personalization
capabilities, thereby providing KG Telecom with a clear evolution path for
expanding its services over next generation networks.
