Knight Ridder Names Laurel Shackelford as Executive Editor Of The Monterey County Herald

    SAN JOSE, Calif, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Knight Ridder (NYSE:   KRI) today
 announced the appointment of Laurel Shackelford as executive editor of
 The Monterey County Herald. She replaces Peter S. Young, who left in January.
     Knight Ridder Vice President/News Jerry Ceppos said, "Laurel has vast
 experience as a reporter, writer and editor. She is fair-minded and has a deep
 passion for covering local news and being sensitive to the many nuances that

     Shackelford has most recently served as deputy editor and Opinion Page
 editor. Prior to joining The Herald in March 1998, she spent nearly 25 years
 at The Courier-Journal and The Louisville Times in Kentucky, where she held a
 variety of positions: reporter, assistant city editor, city editor, editorial
 writer and columnist.
     She received a First Place Award for Editorial Commentary from The
 California Newspaper Publishers Association in 1998 for newspapers with
 circulation between 25,001 and 75,000.
     Shackelford is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at
 Chapel Hill. She received a Nieman Fellowship from Harvard University in 1980.
