SAN JOSE, Calif., April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The newspaper business
continued to experience soft revenue in March, pushing total operating revenue
down 6.4% below the same period a year ago. For the year to date, it's down
 3.1%.
Total advertising revenue was down 6.0% for the month and down 2.5% for
the year to date. The weakness cut across many markets. Fort Worth, however,
was up 3.4%, and Wichita was up 7.3%, while Miami was flat.
Retail ad revenue for the month showed strength -- up 5.1% on a linage
decrease of 2.5%. For the year to date, retail revenue was up 3.1% on a linage
decrease of 5.0%. March retail ad revenue in Miami was up 11.2%, Kansas City

6.9%. For the year to date, revenue was down 7.6% on a linage decrease of
3.6%. All of the major markets were down. The primary shortfall was in help
 wanted.
Factored part-run linage was up 4.6% for the month. Circulation revenue
was down 2.2% for the month.
Other revenue was down 24.3% for the month, primarily reflecting a decline
in operating results from Detroit (which under new accounting rules are shown
as a net number in this line), and the absence in 2001 of Professional
Exchange, MediaStream, Inc., and Cable Connection, all of which were sold in
 2000.
