Apr 27, 2001, 01:00 ET from Lucent Technologies

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- KPN Mobile of the
Netherlands has signed a memorandum of understanding with
Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) to supply its Universal Mobile
Telecommunications Services (UMTS) network in the Netherlands, Belgium and
 Germany.
Under the terms of the memorandum, Lucent will initially provide the
majority of the radio access network for the KPN Mobile project, representing
a value of around Euro 100 million (US $90 million) for the period of 2001 to
2002. This covers the UMTS radio access network consisting of Lucent's line
of Flexent(TM) UMTS base stations, as well as network design and planning
 services.
KPN Mobile selected Lucent because of Lucent's Bell Labs pioneering
development of the underlying wireless technology for UMTS, as well as
Lucent's experience in rapid and cost-efficient network roll-out backed by the
company's technical and professional resources in place throughout the region.
"KPN Mobile's decision to have Lucent build their UMTS networks here in
the heart of Europe is a reflection and confirmation of a successful and
long-standing relationship between the two parties. Our focus is now on a
rapid network implementation to enable KPN Mobile to launch new
revenue-generating services as quickly as possible," said Ben Verwaayen, vice
 chairman of Lucent Technologies.
Lucent is the worldwide leader in commercial code division multiple access
(CDMA), with more than 45,000 base stations in service in more than
160 carrier networks around the world. In addition, the company has been
collaborating since 1996 with Japan's NTT DoCoMo in commercialising the
enabling wireless technology for UMTS, known as wideband-CDMA (W-CDMA).
Lucent is applying this combined experience in commercial and next-generation
W-CDMA technology to the development of its flagship world-class 3G Flexent
OneBTS((TM)) line of wireless base stations.
