L.A. Community College District to Implement SAP(R) E-Business Solutions

Largest U.S. Community College System Engages SAP Solutions

To Improve Operations

Apr 30, 2001, 01:00 ET from SAP Public Services, Inc.

WASHINGTON, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- SAP Public Services, Inc., a
subsidiary of SAP America, Inc., announced today that the Los Angeles
Community College District (LACCD) recently selected SAP(R) solutions to
better manage its human resources, procurement, payroll, and financial
business processes. LACCD is SAP Public Services' first community college
customer. SAP America, Inc. is a subsidiary of SAP AG (NYSE: SAP), the
world's leading provider of e-business solutions.
The contract expands SAP Public Services' work in the higher education
market and demonstrates its commitment to providing solutions to help college
and university systems to focus on their main purpose -- educating students.
SAP Public Services will replace LACCD's financial and human resources
applications that were developed in-house over 30 years ago. LACCD is looking
for technology solutions that are "more flexible, complete and easier to use
and maintain," said Rob Alworth, chief information officer, LACCD.
"SAP provided a comprehensive, integrated, technologically sophisticated
application suite that appealed both to our functional users and our
technology support staff," Alworth said. "When the new software is fully
operational, our colleges will have the information they need to serve
students more effectively and conduct their day-to-day operations more
efficiently. It will be a huge step forward for our organization. The
project also affords a golden opportunity to re-engineer some outdated
 processes and policies."
Originally the LACCD looked only at SAP Public Services' e-business
solutions for its human resources and payroll functions. However, after
evaluating the integration capabilities of the SAP e-solutions, the LACCD
decided to purchase a comprehensive package that included human resources,
financial and procurement functionality. The LACCD's use of SAP e-business
solutions will help improve its ability to access information and will
streamline the district's core business operations. "Community colleges play
a critical role in our education system and in our society by truly serving
their communities," said Tom Shirk, president of SAP Public Services. "SAP
Public Services provides the e-business solutions to help them concentrate on
advancing educational opportunities for students of all ages and backgrounds,
 rather than administrative tasks."
The largest community college district in the nation, the Los Angeles
Community College District encompasses an area of 884 square miles in
metropolitan Los Angeles. The District is governed by an elected seven-member
Board of Trustees and is part of the statewide California Community College
system. Organized in 1969, the District serves a population of several
million residents. The District employs approximately 6,400 full- and part-
time employees and an additional 5,000 other employees such as student
workers. District-wide enrollment in fall 1999 was 101,820 students.
