Laclede Gas Announces Transition Plan to Replace Retiring Operations Executives

    ST. LOUIS, April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Board of Directors of Laclede Gas
 Company (NYSE:   LG) today approved a transition plan to replace two executives
 who will retire on July 1, 2001, after serving Laclede for more than 45 years
 each.
     The Board announced the election, effective July 1, of John Moten, Jr.,
 60, to the position of Senior Vice President - Operations and Marketing, and
 of Craig R. Hoeferlin, 39, to the position of Vice President - Operations.
     Mr. Moten, currently Vice President - Community Relations, will replace
 Ralph L. Russell, 64, Senior Vice President - Chief Operations Officer. Mr.
 Hoeferlin, currently Assistant Vice President - Operations, will succeed Jim
 G. Smith, 64, Vice President - Operations.
     "Laclede is fortunate that we have someone of John Moten's broad industry
 experience and abilities to step in and lead critical areas of responsibility
 in our Company," said Douglas H. Yaeger, Laclede's Chairman of the Board,
 President and Chief Executive Officer. "John spent nearly two decades in
 Operations before expanding his responsibilities into other key areas of
 company concern. He has represented Laclede on multiple corporate, operational
 and community-related issues before state and federal authorities. I am
 convinced he will do an outstanding job in his new position," Yaeger said.
     Mr. Moten, 60, joined Laclede in 1962 as an Assistant Chemist and spent 18
 years in the Operations Department, holding various supervisory positions
 including Chief Chemist, Laboratory Superintendent and Director of Laboratory
 Services. He was promoted to the position of Director of Conservation Services
 in 1980, Director of Community Affairs/Conservation in 1986, and was elected
 Vice President - Community Relations in 1994. He holds a Bachelor's of Science
 degree in Chemistry (1962) from Morehouse College and has done additional
 studies in chemical physics at the University of Minnesota and in the Graduate
 School of Chemistry at Washington University.
     Mr. Moten is very active in the St. Louis community is a member of the
 Saint Louis University Board of Trustees; the St. Louis County Board of
 Election Commissioners, for which he serves as Secretary; the Board of
 Directors and Past Chairman of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis; and
 the St. Louis Black Leadership Roundtable.
     Mr. Hoeferlin joined Laclede in 1984 as an Engineer.  He held various
 positions in the Engineering Department before becoming Superintendent of
 Instrumentation and Control in 1991, Senior Maintenance Engineer in January
 1996. He became Chief Engineer in December 1996, Superintendent of Operations
 in May 1999, and was elected Assistant Vice President - Operations in December
 2000.  He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering (1984)
 from the University of Missouri at Columbia.  He is Vice President of the
 Board of Directors of Missouri One Call System, a not-for-profit organization
 responsible for providing facility locations of member utilities to
 contractors and other affected parties.
     Both Mr. Russell and Mr. Smith began their careers at Laclede Gas in
 entry-level positions, working their way through the ranks to their current
 key Management positions.
     Mr. Russell joined Laclede in 1956 in the Customer Relations Department
 and then served as a Customer Relations Representative and as a Collector.  He
 was promoted to Supervisor of the St. Charles District Office in 1968 and to
 Regional Divisions Coordinator in the Planning and Development Department in
 1972, when Laclede purchased the Missouri Natural Gas Company.  He was
 promoted to Director of Sales and Service for Laclede's Missouri Natural and
 Midwest Missouri divisions in 1981 and to Director of Operations for those two
 divisions in 1985.  He became Laclede's General Sales Manager in 1994,
 Director of Marketing in 1995, and was elected Vice President - Marketing in
 1997, Senior Vice President - Operations and Marketing in 1998, and Senior
 Vice President - Chief Operations Officer in March 2000. Mr. Russell holds a
 Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of
 Missouri at St. Louis.
     Mr. Smith joined Laclede in 1956 in the Stores Department and then worked
 in the Meter Department and the Service and Installation Department. He was
 promoted to Assistant to the Superintendent of the Standards Department in
 1964, became Assistant to the Superintendent of the Meter Department in 1965,
 and a Foreman in SAID in 1965. He was promoted to Assistant Superintendent of
 SAID-Central in 1969 and served in the same position in the South District
 before being promoted to Superintendent of SAID-South in 1971. He was named
 Superintendent of the Service and Measurement Department in 1986, became
 Superintendent of Service and Facilities Management in 1988, was elected
 Assistant Vice President - Operations in 1997 and Vice President - Operations
 in 1998.
