Lionbridge ForeignDesk(R) Is Rapidly Embraced by the Open-Source Community and End-Users

Computer Aided Translation Technology Exceeds 10,000 Downloads in Four Months;

Surpasses Popular Off-the-Shelf Tools

Apr 02, 2002, 00:00 ET from Lionbridge Technologies, Inc.

    WALTHAM, Mass., April 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Lionbridge Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: LIOX), a provider of solutions for
worldwide deployment of technology and content, today announced that its
ForeignDesk suite of translation memory tools, which the Company made
available as open-source software, has been downloaded by more than ten
thousand users to date. Lionbridge published ForeignDesk to the open-source
community in November of 2001, making it the first publicly available open-
source Computer Aided Translation (CAT) technology.
Lionbridge decided to open-source the ForeignDesk suite in order to
rapidly create a free, publicly available, desktop-based Translation
Memory(TM) technology. Because ForeignDesk embraces industry standards such
as XML and TMX (Translation Memory Exchange), users that download the software
are quickly integrating the technology with other off-the-shelf and
 proprietary products and processes.
"That ForeignDesk has received more than ten thousand downloads in such a
short period of time underscores our belief that open-sourcing ForeignDesk was
the right move for our customers and industry," said Jonathan Clark, Chief
Technology Officer, Lionbridge. "Clearly ForeignDesk is opening up tremendous
opportunities for customers that consider translation memory tools cost
prohibitive. It is not only benefiting the development community in the
globalization sector but also in related industries such as content management
where translation memory can be integrated into new and existing
 applications."
In addition, Lionbridge has released an updated version of ForeignDesk
that includes support for the latest and final version of Microsoft .NET. The
complete suite, source code and supporting documentation for ForeignDesk
available at http://www.foreigndesk.net/ hosted as part of the SourceForge
 project.
