Local Acme Markets Launch Pneumococcal (Pneumonia) Prevention Program

Apr 04, 2001, 01:00 ET from Acme Markets, Inc.

MALVERN, Pa., April 4 /PRNewswire/ -- This spring, Acme customers can add
one more item to their shopping lists...and it just might save their lives.
Today, Acme Markets launches its Pneumococcal Prevention Program in 68 of the
region's stores. The program seeks to increase public awareness of
pneumococcal disease and provide low cost pneumococcal immunizations to
 individuals through portable immunization clinics.
Pneumococcal infections account for an estimated 500,000 cases of
pneumonia each year and result in 20,000 to 40,000 deaths in the United
States. Many of these deaths are preventable. Safe and effective vaccines
that prevent pneumonia have been available for decades. However, pneumococcal
infections continue to claim more lives than any other vaccine-preventable
bacterial disease. The vast majority of those affected are the elderly or
people with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes. Unlike the flu,
pneumonia can and does strike at any time of year.
Protection from pneumococcal disease comes with a simple vaccine
injection, which can be given at any time of year. Seniors may only need one
dose in a lifetime; others, who are at-risk, may need an additional
vaccination after five years. The nation's health objective is to increase
the number of senior citizens who receive at least one dose of the
pneumococcal vaccine to at least 90% by the year 2010.
Acme President Carl Jablonski said, "This immunization program is another
example of Acme's continuing health care commitment to our customers. With
68 stores participating throughout our four-state marketing area, anyone who
desires to be immunized can conveniently do so. I encourage our customers to
take advantage of our immunization program."
Acme Markets, in its role as a good corporate citizen as well as a health
care provider, believes that its Pneumococcal Prevention Program will lessen
the impact of under-protection in medically fragile populations. Joining
forces with public and private health care organizations, including KePRO,
PRONJ, Healthy Solutions, DVIC and MercyCARE, Acme and our partners have
provided educational tools to Acme pharmacists so that they can provide
information on the benefit of becoming immunized.
For a list of stores and schedule for the immunization clinics, contact
Walt Rubel at 610-889-4354. The public can call 800-241-ACME to check the
clinic schedule for their neighborhood. Immunizations are offered at no
charge for Medicare Part B participants and at a discounted rate of $22.00 for
 all others.
