Local2Me.com a Big Success Connecting Bay Area Peninsula Neighborhoods

Apr 11, 2001, 01:00 ET from Local2Me

BELMONT, Calif., April 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Online neighbors in
San Mateo and surrounding cities have recently been trading recommendations,
goods, and ideas through Local2Me.com, a free Internet community service that
connects people via personalized e-mailing lists. A great landscaper was
uncovered. A discussion of best restaurants in the area unearthed 18 neighbor
recommendations. And locals have been helping and getting to know each other
informally both online and in person.
The service has just broadened its availability to neighborhoods
throughout Northern California. New members can sign up on the web site,
http://www.Local2Me.com , and choose the group with whom they want to connect,
such as "people within three miles of me." They then exchange messages with
the resulting group via e-mail or the Local2Me web site.
Jan Floyd, a Local2Me user in Belmont, wrote to her neighbors, "Although I
'peek' at several AOL and Internet message boards on occasion, it's a delight
to belong to a cyber community that actually means something to us. Good
job!" Another member, Irene Chen, formed a book club with several neighbors
after a brief ad hoc discussion. After their first meeting, Chen was happy to
discover she now knows 10 people near her and is already bumping into them
around town. Diane Harris found a great haircutter and recommended her
seasoned landscaper. Kasey Varney hired Diane's landscaper, and is very happy
 with the work he's done.
Local2Me is bucking a social trend identified by several recent books and
studies that point to a rapid decline of community engagement that is
especially bad in the Bay Area. The San Jose Mercury News recently reported
on The Social Capital Community Benchmark Survey, a national project involving
40 communities around the country. The survey, designed by Harvard Professor
Robert Putnam, said that Silicon Valley is a place where people live in
isolation in terms of informal relationships.
"Local2Me is all about informal relationships!" exclaims Michael Olivier,
creator of Local2Me. "Few of us have time for a quarterly neighborhood
meeting or a 30-minute conversation with a neighbor. But there's a lot of
value in being connected to people near us, and the Neighbors Local2Me service
 makes it easy to connect."
The service has enjoyed rapid growth, having doubled its user base in the
last six weeks. This is due to word of mouth, with an average of one in two
members referring a new member per month.
Olivier is a Belmont resident who decided to use the Internet to foster
stronger local communities. He is a Director of Engineering at Excite@Home
and runs Local2Me in his spare time. For more information, visit the web site
