Authentic Bavarian beer, brats, and traditional music and culture of Bavaria
have come to America as BavariaFest, an Oktoberfest-style cultural
celebration, hits 17 cities across the U.S. The national tour kicked off in
Atlanta this weekend (April 20) and will run through December of 2001.
Housed within an extravagant tent built in Germany by the same company
that makes the Oktoberfest tents used in Munich, BavariaFest is designed to
immerse participants directly into Bavaria and its culture. The beer served
at BavariaFest is the same beer served at the world-famous Hofbrauhaus
Traunstein in Munich, and the menu boasts traditional recipes such as
bratwurst, hendle (rotisserie roast chicken), haxen (pork roast), sauerkraut,
goulash soup, radi (traditional spiral-cut radishes), true Bavarian pretzels
and apple strudel with vanilla sauce. Festivities also include non-stop
entertainment with traditional music and dance.
"We designed BavariaFest as a celebration of the best things from Bavaria
in the most authentic environment possible, with German bands, long open-
seating tables just like those used at Munich's Oktoberfest, and the world's
best beer. When people walk into our tent, they'll feel like they've stepped
directly into Munich," said David Kreindel, marketing director of On Tour
Events, organizers of BavariaFest. "From the beer and food to the visual feast
of upbeat entertainment, it's as authentic as it gets without having to hop a
 plane."
So authentic, in fact, that the beer served at BavariaFest is made
according to the German Purity Law of 1516. Called "reinheitsgebot," the law
dictates that beer may only be brewed using malt, yeast, hops and water.
Hofbrauhaus Traunstein still uses this method and is supplying the beer,
shipped over fresh and cold, for BavariaFest.
"Bavarian beer is the best in the world and once you taste it, you realize
 there's no comparison," added Kreindel.
Although BavariaFest is housed in a "tent," the 28,000-square-foot setting
looks like a permanent structure with high ceilings and decorative features
replicating an authentic Bavarian biergarten that one might find at Munich's
Oktoberfest. The kitchen itself is a state-of-the-art facility, built
specifically for the events and docked outside the tent.
Munich's Oktoberfest is the largest fair in the world, drawing 6.5 million
visitors over the 18-day event, but not everybody has the opportunity to go
there. On Tour Events executives wanted to give Americans a taste of the real
thing by bringing the culture, food and spirit of Bavaria here for everyone to
 enjoy.
After Atlanta, BavariaFest will travel to several cities, including
Raleigh, Columbus, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, St. Louis,
San Diego, Phoenix, Tucson, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. A complete list
of cities and tour schedule is available on www.bavariafest.com.
