Apr 24, 2001, 01:00 ET from American Red Cross of Greater Chicago

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., April 24 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- The
American Red Cross in Illinois announced today the formation of a Illinois
Disaster Relief Cabinet that will be activated in times of major state
disasters, such as the current flooding affecting families in western
Illinois. Lt. Governor Corinne Wood will chair the fundraising Cabinet.
"This Cabinet is an important tool for the American Red Cross and will
ensure that Red Cross chapters across Illinois have the necessary funds to
respond immediately when common disasters such as floods, tornadoes and other
severe weather strike our state," said Lt. Gov. Wood. "We are hopeful that
the business and community leaders who make up the Cabinet will help people
understand that their support is critical to facilitating effective disaster
 relief."
In the Quad Cities area and elsewhere along the Mississippi River,
American Red Cross disaster workers are currently providing meals to
sandbaggers working to save the many towns threatened by rising waters. The
American Red Cross is prepared to shelter people displaced by the flood and
provide for their basic human needs while they are away from home. In
addition, Red Cross workers offer flood cleanup information to help homeowners
safely recover salvageable belongings and provide counseling to help families
 deal with disaster-related stress.
The American Red Cross has a longstanding relationship with the State of
Illinois when it comes to responding to natural disasters. An important part
of Illinois' Emergency Operation Plan, the American Red Cross is the only non-
government agency with a seat at the State's Emergency Operations Center in
Springfield. The American Red Cross also regularly participates in
preparedness programs with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.
To help the Red Cross continue to save lives, contributions can be made to
