Lucent Technologies Reinforces Commitment to Supplier Diversity by Taking A Leadership Role in the Upcoming Supercomm Diversity Day

Lucent's National Director of Supply Chain Diversity to Chair the Event

Apr 30, 2001, 01:00 ET from Lucent Technologies

MURRAY HILL, N.J., April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Reinforcing its continued
commitment to supplier diversity, Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU), once again,
is playing a key role in SUPERCOMM's annual supplier diversity event.
The annual Minority-, Women- and Disabled-Veteran-Owned Business
Enterprises (MWDVBE) Day includes a series of meetings attended by service
provider and OEM executives to discuss partnering with MWDVBE organizations.
Heather Herndon-Wright, Lucent's national director of supply chain diversity,
is chairing this year's event, which will be held on Monday, June 4, at the
Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.
In 1999, Lucent was one of the 14 original companies to sign the Supplier
Diversity Challenge -- an initiative that works toward world-class supplier
diversity programs and annual supplier diversity results of 10 percent MWDVBE
procurement. Lucent also signed the challenge in 2000. At this year's event,
the organizers will announce the 2000 results, and last year's and this year's
featured companies will accept and sign the challenge for the coming year.
"Supply chain diversity makes good business sense, which is why Lucent
views it as a business imperative," said Herndon-Wright. "As the continued
growth of SUPERCOMM's Diversity Day shows, many in the industry share our
view. Lucent remains committed to our objective of realizing 10 percent of our
supply chain business with diversity enterprises."
The day's agenda includes presentations from representatives of
17 different companies. As part of the afternoon "View from the Top" session,
Lucent Sales Vice President John Bratten will team with BellSouth Vice
President of Supply Chain Services Tim Houghton to discuss the two companies'
joint efforts in expanding the opportunities and capabilities of diversity
 suppliers.
The day will culminate with a signing ceremony and reception immediately
following the afternoon session. For information about SUPERCOMM 2001, visit
 its Web site at http://www.supercomm2001.com.
The sole telecom equipment vendor sitting at the Billion Dollar Roundtable
A number of organizations working to promote supplier diversity have
publicly recognized Lucent's commitment to this important business imperative.
In fact, Minority Business News U.S.A. and Women's Enterprise Magazine
recently honored Lucent by naming it a charter member of the Billion Dollar
Roundtable, which includes corporations who spend more than $1 billion
annually with minority- and women-owned businesses.
Lucent was the only telecom equipment vendor to make the list, joining
nine other companies in receiving the award on March 28. The companies
collectively purchased more than $18 billion in 2000 on products and services
 from minority- and women-owned enterprises.
"Lucent has a long-standing commitment to diversity in our supply chain,
and we are honored to be the only telecom systems vendor among the inaugural
members of the Billion Dollar Roundtable," said Herndon-Wright. "We remain
committed to including diversity partners in our business strategy and are
using a suite of strategic Diversity Powered Solutions across our entire
 supply chain."
