Apr 16, 2001, 01:00 ET from Lucent Technologies

MURRAY HILL, N.J., April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- In an agreement that builds
upon the relationship between Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) and
U.S. Cellular (Amex: USM), Lucent will supply digital wireless systems,
engineering and installation services for the existing U.S. Cellular network
in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The four-year
contract is worth up to $100 million and will expand U.S. Cellular's network
capacity and capability, as well as improve the quality and reliability of the
 company's wireless service.
Under the agreement, Lucent has begun installing an advanced digital
network based on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology. The system,
which will help position U.S. Cellular for next-generation wireless
telecommunications, is supported by Lucent's Mobile Switching Center, Series
II Cell Sites and CDMA Double Density Growth Frames, all of which support the
CDMA2000 3G standard. Lucent also will provide engineering and installation
services through its Lucent Worldwide Services organization.
"We have taken definitive steps to enhance our network and position
U.S. Cellular for future growth," said Dick Goehring, executive vice president
of engineering and chief technology officer for U.S. Cellular. "Lucent's
reliable, high-performing CDMA technology will enhance our network and provide
our customers with improved voice clarity and greater service reliability."
Bob Bellion, vice president of sales for Lucent Technologies, said,
"U.S. Cellular continues to rely on Lucent to deliver superior service to its
customers. Lucent is the leader in developing CDMA technology and knows how
to make it work in the marketplace. This agreement affirms Lucent's know-how."
Lucent has more than 40,000 CDMA base stations and 160 CDMA networks in
commercial service around the world. CDMA is a wireless transmission standard
that sends digitized transmissions of encoded speech over the airwaves and
then uses a unique code to reassemble it in its original format at the
receiving end. CDMA assigns a unique electronic code to each call signal and
allows many more simultaneous calls over a service provider's network.
