Lumenos(SM) Agrees to Provide New Benefit Plan Option to Novartis' Former Ciba Geigy Retirees by Year-End and Anticipates Introducing the New Option to All Novartis Participants in 2002

Fortune Global 200 Company Gives Employees More

Choice and Control Over Their Health Care Decisions

    ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 24 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ --
Lumenos (http://www.lumenos.com), an innovative consumer-driven health care
company, today announced an agreement with Novartis Corporation to offer the
Lumenos health care program to Novartis' former Ciba Geigy retirees in the
United States by the end of 2001. Lumenos is currently in discussion with
Novartis on offering this option to all Novartis participants, including
 retirees in 2002.
With the Lumenos health program, participating former Ciba Geigy retirees
will be able to take control of their health care spending for routine
treatments like office visits, immunizations and annual physicals. Unlike the
current HMO and POS (point-of-service) models that manage your care, Lumenos
puts that control in consumers' hands. Consumers determine which doctors and
treatments they receive not the third party administrators.
"Novartis is clearly a leader in offering programs that put their
employees first," said Chip Tooke, president of Lumenos. "Their decision to
work with Lumenos validates the need for an alternative health care solution
that caters to the needs of employees who want more choice and control over
their health care decisions and dollars."
Employees and employers are seeking additional health care alternatives
that provide more choice and personalized care at affordable prices. All
indications point to an impending shift from a managed care model to a
consumer-driven model. The Lumenos solution fits perfectly with that trend.
"We believe that encouraging and empowering our retirees to take an active
role in making important health care decisions benefits not only the
individual but our company as a whole," said Terry Barnett, president and
chief executive officer of Novartis Corporation. "Our retirees are asking for
more choice and control over their health care, and now, through Lumenos, we
can give them the control they have been asking for."
The Lumenos health program will be rolled out to Novartis' former Ciba
Geigy retirees in the US during the third quarter of 2001. Retirees will have
the option of joining Lumenos or continuing on their current insurance plan.
With Lumenos, self-insured employers make funds available in a Lumenos
Health Savings Account for each enrolled employee. Employees spend this money
as they choose -- on routine medical expenses, plus wellness and alternative
health services not usually covered by health plans. Whatever is not spent
rolls over and accumulates in the employee's Health Savings Account.
Employees are backed by additional health coverage should a significant health
event occur. To help employees spend their health care dollars wisely, they
can access extensive, easy-to-use online tools. For example, Lumenos has
partnered with DoctorQuality, a leading provider of Internet-based health care
quality solutions, to provide award-winning information and interactive tools
such as online condition-specific workbooks and a propriety provider database
 with quality ratings.
"We are continually faced with the challenge of giving employees the
benefits they want at a price that both the participant and Novartis can
afford," stated Bill Flannery, director, compensation and benefits of
Novartis. "By working with Lumenos, we have created a win-win situation for
 everyone."
