Luminous Networks Achieves Network Reliability Certification for Its Metro Optical Switches

Certification Underscores Luminous' Ability to Deliver Carrier-Class Service

Apr 02, 2001, 01:00 ET from Luminous Networks

CUPERTINO, Calif., April 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Luminous Networks, the first
provider of carrier-class optical Ethernet platforms for Metropolitan Area
Networks, today announced that its PacketWave(TM) M1000 metro optical access
platform has passed the Network Equipment Building Standard (NEBS)
Level 3 certification testing. Following months of rigorous testing by
Garwood Laboratories, the Luminous platform is fully certified for deployment
 by telecommunications carriers.
Telecommunications service providers rely on NEBS certification to ensure
the operating performance and safety of equipment deployed in their network
facilities. The NEBS certification process involves an extensive suite of
tests designed to evaluate telecommunications network equipment in a variety
of environmental conditions, including fire, earthquake, high vibration,
 extreme temperatures, and electromagnetic interference.
Luminous' PacketWave platform was developed from the ground up to meet the
carriers' rigorous requirements for equipment located in their central
offices. By contrast, products developed for enterprise applications do not
typically achieve NEBS certification, and therefore cannot be reliably
deployed for demanding carrier applications in Metropolitan Area Networks.
Luminous' NEBS Level 3 certification sets a new standard for metro optical
platforms, in contrast to alternative platforms that are merely designated as
NEBS-compliant, with no assurance that the stringent NEBS testing requirements
 have been met.
Don Bennett, Telecommunications Test Manager, Garwood Laboratories, Inc.,
stated, "I cannot stress enough the importance of completing the series of
NEBS tests, particularly the Level 3 program. For Luminous Networks to
successfully complete the full NEBS Level 3 not only assures them distribution
to any and all LECs, but it also speaks volumes on the integrity of the
 PacketWave M1000 system."
The achievement of NEBS Level 3 certification is a major milestone for
Luminous, as telecommunications carriers require that equipment maintain this
level of certification to ensure reliability in a broad range of environmental
conditions. Achieving full Level 3 status provides Luminous' customers with
the assurance that its products have achieved the highest level of network
 reliability.
