Luminous Networks Partners with Photonic Bridges to Distribute Metro Optical Network Solutions in China

Partnership Brings Innovative Metro Area Network Solution to Optical

Networks in China

Apr 23, 2001, 01:00 ET from Luminous Networks, Inc.

    CUPERTINO, Calif., April 23 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ --
Luminous Networks, Inc., the first provider of carrier-class optical Ethernet
platforms for Metropolitan Area Networks, today announced a partnership with
Photonic Bridges to open sales and distribution channels for Luminous
throughout China. Photonic Bridges, the first end-to-end optical/data
internetworking system integrator in China, has responsibility for marketing,
distribution, implementation, and customer care support of Luminous' optical
 packet networking products throughout China.
Photonic Bridges will engage with telecommunications carriers throughout
China on behalf of Luminous as the country's Metropolitan Area Networks are
built out. Luminous' solution enables carriers in China to deliver
high-quality differentiated data services and toll-quality voice services over
IP-optimized optical packet networks. The timing for this partnership is
ideal, with the rapid emergence of the telecommunications market in China
-- forecasted to grow rapidly with China's entry into the World Trade
 Organization (WTO).
"We selected Photonic Bridges as our strategic distribution partner based
on their proven understanding of the market needs of the Asia/Pacific region,"
said Alex Naqvi, president and CEO of Luminous Networks. "We have been
impressed by the caliber of Photonic Bridge's team, their knowledge of the
Chinese market, and their ability to integrate the Luminous PacketWave
platform into the build-out of China's Metropolitan Area Networks."
"The partnership of Luminous and Photonic Bridges has already proven
successful, with the announcement today of our strategic customer, China
Netcom Corporation," said Gerry Wong, CEO of Photonic Bridges. "Our
partnership combines Luminous' innovative metro optical platform with our
experienced optical networking team, which brings profound insight to the
 telecommunications market in China."
In a separate announcement today, China Netcom Corporation (CNC), one of
the major telecommunications carriers in China, announced the selection of
Luminous Networks to deliver its Metropolitan Area Network platform as a key
element in a large-scale build-out of China's metro optical networks. China
Netcom will use Luminous' PacketWave optical access switches to deliver
services to Metropolitan Area Networks beginning in Shanghai and Guangzhou.
Luminous Networks' PacketWave optical access switches enable Metropolitan
Area Network service providers to offer both toll-quality voice and data
traffic on a single platform and to scale as their networks grow. Luminous'
platform provides the capacity to handle rapidly increasing data traffic, and
the flexibility to support a wide range of applications without sacrificing
system reliability or voice quality. Applications of the Luminous optical
platform include service aggregation and transport of IP data and circuit
voice services in metro access business parks, multi-tenant buildings,
co-locations in central offices, and in long-haul carrier points of presence.
