Majority Whip Tom DeLay: Allow Americans to Keep More of What They Earn

Apr 04, 2001, 01:00 ET from Office of the Majority Whip

WASHINGTON, April 4 /PRNewswire/ -- House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-TX)
today joined other Republican leaders at a press conference highlighting
recent Republican accomplishments, including initiatives that would allow the
American people to keep more of what they earn through debt reduction and tax
 relief.
    Congressman DeLay's statement follows:

"Friends, the Bush Administration is blowing fresh life into a primary
Republican priority: Allowing the American people to keep more of what they
earn. We're doing it in two ways. First, we retire the federal debt as
quickly as possible by paying off the maximum level of debt reduction. We're
paying all we can, without raising the costs of repayment.
"And we hear a novel note of caution in the objections Democrats are
raising to block tax relief. But don't be misled. The Democrats, who today
tout fiscal discipline, spent us into debt when they wrote the national
budgets. We're still paying off their spendthrift legacy of reckless
 government spending.
"The second way we're protecting the surplus is by letting taxpayers keep
more of what they earn through tax relief. The current tax code is
fundamentally unfair. It penalizes death. It penalizes marriage. It
punishes success. And because of the tax code's mind-numbing complexity,
millions of hard-working men and women waste countless hours every April.
"We're pushing forward with our campaign to reform the tax code. We're
making it fairer, flatter, simpler, and less burdensome to the American
people. President Bush shares our objective. He stood tall for working men
and women by demanding tax relief through the course of his campaign.
"Now, it's time to stand together so that we can help every American
taxpayer by lowering the tax burden through debt relief and tax relief. Tax
dollars belong to the people that earned them, let's bear that in mind."
