FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- A Florida car mechanic has
embarked on a one-man, cross-country quest in hopes of realizing his lifelong
dream of appearing on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
Mike Babone, 34, already has convinced 95,000 people around the country to
sign a petition saying they want to see him on the Tonight Show.
Babone is a former Canadian who has traveled 7,500 miles to football
stadiums, strip malls and retirement homes and begged people to sign his
petition. If he gets on the Tonight Show, he'd like to play a one-on-one
hockey match with Jay Leno as the goalie.
The rigors of the trek have ruined Babone's marriage, but he says the
possibility of appearing on the Tonight Show is worth it.
The Tonight Show odyssey began one year ago in a small Miami strip mall.
Armed with nothing more than a petition which read, "Yes! I want to see
Mike Babone on The Tonight Show. Give him his dream!" and a home video
camera, Babone began his arduous quest. Babone even got a hometown sponsor,
Bill's Tar Pit and Ribs, to help defray the traveling expenses.
"It all started when I was 10," said Babone. "I woke up one night and
went into the living room. The TV was on and there was Johnny Carson. I knew
then what I had to do. Of course, I didn't have many friends as a child,"
 Babone added philosophically.
Having forsaken any semblance of a life to pursue his dream, Babone says
he will continue collecting signatures until he has what he calls a "Mandate
from the American people." Asked if he would consider an appearance on
another late night talk show such as Letterman or Conan, Babone responded,
 "There is no substitute."
