March Sales Increase 10.5% for The May Department Stores Company

Apr 12, 2001, 01:00 ET from The May Department Stores Company

ST. LOUIS, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The May Department Stores Company
(NYSE: MAY) today reported preliminary net retail sales (sales) of
$1.24 billion for the five-week period ended April 7, a 10.5% increase over
$1.12 billion in the similar period last year. Store-for-store sales
increased 5.2%. Sales comparisons in March 2001 benefited from Easter
occurring two weeks earlier this fiscal year and the related movement of a
major sales promotion event from the first week of fiscal April 2000 to the
last week of fiscal March 2001. The company anticipates its April performance
will be adversely affected by this calendar shift.
Sales for the first two months of fiscal 2001 were $2.17 billion, up 7.2%
over $2.03 billion during the first two months of fiscal 2000.
      March sales were as follows:

                                MARCH AND YEAR-TO-DATE SALES (millions)

                         Fiscal Fiscal Percent Store-for-Store
                          2001 2000 Increase Increase

       March $1,237.3 $1,119.8 10.5% 5.2%
       Year-to-date $2,174.3 $2,028.8 7.2% 2.4%

Sales exclude the sales of stores that have been closed and not replaced
and include lease department sales. Store-for-store sales represent sales of
those stores open during both years. David's Bridal sales are included in
total sales for fiscal 2001 but are not included in store-for-store sales.
During March, May opened eight new department store locations acquired
from Saks Incorporated earlier this year: five Hecht's stores in Nashville,
Tenn., and three Foley's stores -- two in Baton Rouge and one in Lafayette,
La. David's Bridal opened two new stores during the month.
The May Department Stores Company currently operates 435 department stores
and 126 David's Bridal stores in 43 states, the District of Columbia, and
 Puerto Rico.
