Med-Design Co-Developed Product to Launch Commercially as New Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act Requirements Take Effect

New Issued and Pending Patents Further Expand the Market

for Med-Design's Proprietary Center-line Retraction Technology

Apr 18, 2001, 01:00 ET from Med-Design Corporation

    VENTURA, Calif., April 18 /PRNewswire/ --
The Med-Design Corporation (Nasdaq: MEDC), a pioneer in the design and
development of safety needle products for medical use, announced today that it
has been issued a new foreign national patent covering 12 European countries.
In addition, the Company announced that it has applied for three new US
patents and one new international patent. These announcements come on the day
that the recently issued Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
guidelines defining "safer medical devices," and mandating their use in all
health care facilities, go into effect across the United States.
"The issuance of the new OSHA requirements proves to be good timing for
Med-Design as our first co-developed product will be launched commercially
later this month," said James Donegan, Chairman and CEO of Med-Design. "The
revised OSHA standard not only requires healthcare facilities to use safety
products, but more importantly, it mandates that health care facilities
receive input from the practitioners, not only the administrators, when
selecting which products to use. This is particularly important to Med-Design
because our products were developed and refined based on input we received
from thousands of health care workers. As a result, our products not only
provide the highest level of safety, but they are also user-friendly."
Michael Simpson, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of
Med-Design added, "The issuance of this new patent along with the applications
filed for several additional patents strengthens our intellectual property
portfolio as we seek to develop new partnerships and licensing opportunities
for our niche products. We are very confident that our strategy with respect
to our niche products will be enhanced by these new patents."
Med-Design has a significant and impressive portfolio of issued and
pending patents protecting its proprietary retractable safety needle
technology, including 16 US patents, 13 foreign national patents, and
two European patents covering 12 countries that have been issued. In
addition, Med-Design has 18 US, 66 foreign national, 13 European, and
five international patent applications pending. Also, the Company has a
pending United States design patent application, two foreign national design
registrations and three pending foreign design applications. Med-Design has
developed over 26 safety needle products that are designed to enable medical
workers to efficiently perform a wide range of medical procedures at greatly
reduced risk of exposure to accidental needle sticks. The Company develops
user-friendly and cost-effective safety needle devices, utilizing its
expertise in creating products that meet stringent user requirements, while
minimizing manufacturing cost. The Company's safety needle products cover
applications within the important risk areas of blood collection, infusion
therapy, insertion, and injection. Approximately half of the products have
been licensed. Med-Design is actively seeking partners for its remaining
 products.
