Motient and APRIVA Form Strategic Alliance to Add Enhanced Business Value To Wireless Data Services

Alliance Offers M-Business the Most Compact Credit Card Reader Available

Apr 03, 2001, 01:00 ET from Motient Corporation

RESTON, Va., April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Motient Corporation (Nasdaq: MTNT),
owner and operator of the country's largest wireless data network, today
announced an agreement that heralds the next phase of innovative solutions for
wireless data applications. Motient will now be the preferred network
provider for APRIVA, Inc., a company that has developed an attachment for the
Research in Motion 850(TM) Handheld that turns the unit into the most compact
credit card reader on the market.
Originally brought to market as an email tool, new RIM applications are
being devised to make them more useful for vertical industries. Now -- with
the Motient/APRIVA partnership, RIM 850s, and RIM 857s(TM) can be used to
wirelessly approve credit cards, read bar codes and use infrared technology
(IrDA) to print receipts. Future initiatives will include adding the ability
to read smart cards. This is accomplished using the APRIVA designed, small
add-on peripheral that slips onto the RIM device.
"By offering one of the first truly commercial accessory applications for
RIM devices," said Peter Belman, vice president of marketing for Motient
Corporation, "this partnership allows both APRIVA and Motient users to see the
next level of real business value for wireless devices."
This offering is the smallest, lowest priced point-of-sale solution on the
market, and its users have all the capabilities of a PDA, wireless email, the
APRIVA software, and many additional applications right on their hip in one
 device.
Current users include airport shuttle drivers, tradeshow salesmen and tour
operators. Other interested industries include those that use deliverymen,
 repairmen and limo/shuttle/taxi drivers.
"We knew from the beginning what we wanted from our network provider,"
said Ed Gorman, vice president of sales for APRIVA. "National coverage,
pricing structure, and in-building penetration were the most important
features. Motient beat the competition in all three categories."
"The combination of our wireless network with APRIVA's innovation has
resulted in a leading-edge solution like no other," said Belman. "We look
forward to building on this relationship by adding new customers and new
 applications."
