Motient Lights Up Its 100th City With 19.2Kbps Wireless Data Transmission Speed

Continued Deployment of RDLAP Protocol Provides Increased

Speed and Capacity to the Nation's Largest Wireless Data Network

RESTON, Va., April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Motient Corporation (Nasdaq: MTNT),
a leading provider of a wide-range of wireless data communications, recently
reached a significant milestone in its network expansion with the activation
of its 100th city using the Radio Data Link Access Procedure (RDLAP), which
delivers 19.2Kbps. Motient began expanding the use of RDLAP in 1993 with the
activation of Washington, DC and just recently added Laredo, TX as its 100th
city. The RDLAP protocol provides the highest wireless data transmission rates
available to date for a wide area nationwide network.
The Motient network (formerly ARDIS) was originally designed and
implemented by Motorola for IBM in the early 1980s using an MDC4800
transmission protocol -- 4.8Kbps. With the ever-increasing demand for higher
network speed and capacity, Motient began expanding its network using the
superior RDLAP protocol in 1993. RDLAP provides faster transmission speeds of
19.2Kbps and greater network capacity, allowing quicker wireless access to
information and the ability to support more customers.
"The activation of the 100th city using RDLAP is a significant achievement
for our company," said Walter V. Purnell Jr., president and CEO of Motient.
"The Motient network is a core element to the success of our company. As such,
it is imperative that we ensure our network provides the highest capacity to
accommodate users and allows these users the fastest access to their critical
information. This recent activation is proof of our commitment to serve our
customers changing needs and to stay a leader in the wireless data industry."
The Motient network provides the most expansive and pervasive coverage of
any wireless data network in the United States. Comprised of more than 2,400
base stations placed strategically throughout the country, the Motient network
provides unmatched on-the-street and in-building coverage.
Added Purnell, "While a single network layer in smaller cities provides
enormous packet data capacity at 19.2kbps speeds, in larger metropolitan areas
like Manhattan, the network is currently configured with multiple capacity
layers to ensure that we can easily accommodate our prospective customer
growth. In Manhattan there are currently five capacity layers with two more
scheduled to come on line later this year."
