Motorola Integrates New VeriSign Short-Lived Server Certificate Service With Its WAP Gateway

VeriSign's Highly Secure Short-Lived Server Certificate Service Leads Wireless

Market; Ajaxo Customers First to Trial Service

Apr 10, 2001, 01:00 ET from VeriSign, Inc.

    SAN FRANCISCO, RSA(R) CONFERENCE, April 10 /PRNewswire/ --
VeriSign, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRSN), the leading provider of Internet trust
services, and Motorola (NYSE: MOT), the leading provider of integrated
communications and embedded electronic solutions, today announced that
VeriSign will provide the first Wireless Short-Lived Server Certificate
service as part of a planned wireless application trial. The Motorola WAP
Server Solution is an open standards-based solution and the first WAP server
currently on the market to support short-lived certificates. VeriSign is
Motorola's Preferred Provider of public key infrastructure (PKI) services.
"The implementation of short-lived certificates, along with other
continual enhancements to our WAP Server platform, and in combination with the
short-lived wireless server certificate service provided by VeriSign, provides
the greatest level of WAP server authentication available today," said Yvonne
Verse, vice president and director -- Data Solutions Platform Technology and
3rd Party Developer Support, Internet Software and Content Group, Motorola,
Inc. "Motorola has become the first supplier of WAP Server solutions that
support short-lived certificates. Along with VeriSign, a leading provider of
Internet trust services, we're able to greatly enhance the security of mobile
commerce for our operator, enterprise, and consumer customers."
Because of limitations in processing power and session connectivity,
wireless devices are not equipped to check revocation lists, which include
digital certificates which are no longer valid. The short-lived certificate
service overcomes this limitation, as it will cease to issue short-lived
certificates once a certificate has been revoked. VeriSign's unique Wireless
Short-Lived Server Certificate service provides an increased level of security
over existing modes of wireless certificate validation because certificates
are refreshed on a 24-hour basis providing a new, validated certificate every
day of the year. This ensures that the server is never without a valid
 certificate.
"In order to fully realize the power of the wireless Internet, handheld
devices must deliver the same level of trust as users enjoy in the wired
world," said Anil Pereira, senior vice president and group general manager of
VeriSign's Enterprise and Service Provider Division. "By integrating our
Short-lived Server Certificate Service with their WAP Server Solution,
Motorola is delivering an important service to their customers-digital
certificate validation for the wireless Internet."
Motorola's WAP Server Solution allows users to access Internet
applications and content from any WAP enabled device. Key features of
 Motorola's WAP Server Solution include:

     -- WAP 1.2 compliance
-- Interoperability of WAP compliant devices
     -- Encryption -- WTLS Class 1 and 2 Level encryption for e-commerce
        transactions
-- Multiple methods of authentication and security implemented

As part of a planned wireless application trial, Ajaxo, a global
distributor of Motorola's WAP server solution and a leading provider of secure
wireless applications, will be demonstrating the effectiveness of VeriSign's
short-lived server certificate service on the Ajaxo Smart Agent Wireless
Application Server on Motorola's WAP server.
"The introduction of VeriSign's short-lived certificate service signifies
the maturation of the wireless Internet," said Sing Koo, President and CEO of
Ajaxo, "As a provider of secure wireless applications, we look forward to
working with VeriSign and Motorola to deliver the highest level of end-to-end
 security to our customers."
The VeriSign Short-Lived Server Certificates Service is expected to be
 commercially available in May.
