"The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) congratulates
"Secretary Solis makes American history today by becoming the first Latina, and the first Hispanic of Central American heritage, to serve as a senior appointed officer of one of the fifteen executive-level cabinet departments. Her confirmation affirms the tremendous leadership role that Latino leaders are ready to offer the nation.
"NALEO thanks Secretary Solis for her unwavering commitment to public service and we look forward to continuing our work with her on issues of importance to the Latino community and the country as a leader in the Obama Administration.
"With Secretary Solis leading the Labor Department, there is now a vacancy in the U.S. House seat representing the 32nd Congressional District. A special election this spring will fill this vacancy. In compliance with federal voting rights protections, the 32nd Congressional District was created to provide Latino voters a fair opportunity to elect the candidate of their choice. NALEO urges all eligible voters to make their voices heard in the special election."
The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials is the leadership organization of the nation's more than 6,000 Latino elected and appointed officials.
