The historically black, academic health center located in Nashville
presents the award each year to an individual who has "demonstrated a
commitment to the college by enlarging and uniting the circle of caring
individuals who believe in and support Meharry's historic mission of helping
others," said John E. Maupin, Jr., D.D.S., president of Meharry.
Support from the Circle of Friends helps advance Meharry's mission:
 providing superior education and training to its diverse student body;
offering quality clinical care to underserved populations; and engaging in
groundbreaking research on the causes and cures of diseases that have a
 disproportionate impact on African Americans.
"This award symbolizes the true meaning and spirit of friendship," Maupin
said. "Jack shuns the spotlight. He works quietly, but effectively, behind
the scenes in so many humanitarian efforts around the city, and he makes
things happen whenever and wherever he's involved."
Meharry Medical College is a private, historically black academic health
center located in Nashville. Since its founding in 1876, it has been a
leading producer of African American physicians and dentists. Today it is
also one of the nation's leading producers of African American Ph.D. graduates
in the biomedical sciences. The College is particularly well known for its
emphasis on special primary health care needs of minorities, the poor and the
disadvantaged of America. Its graduates are respected nationwide for their
commitment to serving the people of these communities.
HCA (NYSE: HCA) is the nation's leading provider of healthcare services,
composed of locally managed facilities that include approximately 200
hospitals and 70 outpatient surgery centers in 24 states, England and
