COLUMBUS, Ohio, April 4 /PRNewswire/ -- For 19 years, National City Bank
has sponsored the United Negro College Fund/National City Walk-a-thon in
Franklin County. This year they are trying something new, a walk-a-thon T-
shirt design, scholarship competition. The competition is open to Columbus
public high school juniors and will determine National City's corporate UNCF
Walk-a-thon T-shirt design. This year's junior class can compete for a
scholarship by submitting a T-shirt design to their art teacher between
 April 1 and May 4.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for our students and we are thrilled that
National City has chosen our students to be part of this community project,"
said Rosa Smith, superintendent of the Columbus School District. "We have so
many talented students, and this may give one of them an opportunity to follow
 their dreams."
"This year we have asked our public high school juniors to help us
showcase our support for the UNCF by entering original designs in a
competition for our corporate T-shirt," said Gary Glaser, executive vice
president and chairman of Ohio Banking. "Corporate t-shirts are an important
part of our show of support on the day of the walk. We want Columbus to know
that National City is here and continues to support our community."
Designs should incorporate the theme, "A mind is a terrible thing to
waste," be 8 inches by 11 inches, have no more than three colors and be
suitable for reproduction. Art teachers at each high school will choose up to
three designs to submit to National City. A panel of judges will then decide
the winning design, which will be announced on Sept. 22, 2001 during the Walk-
 a-thon at Wolfe Park.
The contest will have three winners. Each winner will receive a
scholarship, payable to an accredited college or university. The first place
winner will receive $3,000; second place will receive $1,500 and the third
place winner will receive $500. The scholarships are not transferable and
will be administered by the UNCF and made payable directly to a post-secondary
institution on behalf of the winners upon enrollment and attendance. All
interested juniors can receive information packages from their school's art
 teachers.
