SANTA CLARA, Calif. and MILPITAS, Calif., April 16 /PRNewswire/ --
National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: NSM), a leader in "Driving Gigabit
to the Desktop," and LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI), a leading
communications chip supplier, today announced their collaboration to provide
Gigabit-over-copper capability to the physical layer of the Ethernet.
Under the terms of a licensing agreement using National's Gigabit PHY
technology, LSI Logic is able to offer a new part, the L80600 Gigabit
Transceiver paired with its StreamPack(TM) intelligent Ethernet switch.
 Together these standard products provide a low-cost, fully-featured 24x2
Ethernet switch reference design with Gigabit Ethernet uplinks. The L80600
transceiver delivers the industry's highest Gigabit-over-copper Ethernet
 performance with low power consumption.
The benefit to customers from this licensing agreement is that National's
Gigabit PHY technology is field proven, based upon their established DP83861
Enhanced GigPHYTER(TM) transceiver part -- an integrated 10/100/1000 Mbps
Gigabit-over-copper Ethernet PHY, which is compatible with the existing CAT
5 installed base and is IEEE-compliant. Combining National's proven Gigabit
Physical layer technology with LSI Logic's highly integrated Ethernet switch
chip provides a complete, proven reference design that will enable quick
 migration to Gigabit-over-copper.
"This collaboration demonstrates our commitment as the industry's leading
supplier of low-cost, feature-rich, complete networking solutions to our data
communications customers," said Bruce Entin, LSI Logic's executive vice
president and general manager for the Networking Infrastructure Group. "By
licensing and qualifying the GigPHYTER transceiver with our switch reference
uplink platforms accelerates time to market for customers and provides a
single source of supply for those seeking excellent price/performance."
"LSI Logic's selection of National indicates that our field proven
GigPHYTER technology delivers the best performance and price points for a
complete solution for the enterprise switch market," said Gobi Padmanabhan,
senior vice president, technology strategy at National Semiconductor. "Our
alliance with LSI Logic and National's leading position with Gigabit network
interface card solutions make National the premier vendor that supports an
end-to-end solution for the rapidly growing Gigabit-over-copper Ethernet
 market."

     Pricing and Availability
Samples are available now from LSI Logic, with volume production scheduled
for May. Pricing for the L80600 transceiver is set at $32.70 in thousand piece
 quantities.

     About the L80600 Gigabit Transceiver
The LSI Logic L80600 Gigabit transceiver, based on National's DP83861
Enhanced GigPHYTER, is manufactured on an advanced 0.18 micron process and is
completely interoperable with all previously shipped Gigabit products.
Advanced features allow greater design flexibility so that a single device can
use low-power Wake-On-LAN functionality, ideal for end-station applications.
In the switching environment, the extensive register control can enable
differentiating features for user critical uplink port control and monitoring.
The L80600 Gigabit transceiver is designed for easy implementation of
10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet LANs. It uses a standard single Quad TX-Transformer
interface and performs error-free operations over 140 meters of standard CAT-5
cable. This robust operation ensures successful deployment of the Gigabit
technology within an existing 10/100M environment using CAT-5 cabling.
Other features of the Gigabit technology include IEEE 802.3u-compliant
Auto-negotiation at all three speeds and an Auto-MDIX that automatically
detects and corrects wiring problems such as MDI crossover, swapped pairs and
reverse polarity at all speeds. These features provide intelligence within
the chip to correct most common wiring problems. The on-chip circuitry also
provides adaptive equalization, echo cancellation, cross-talk cancellation,
precision analog to digital converters, forward error correction and others to
 allow robust and error-free operation.
