DETROIT, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan's
Blue Preferred Plus product is among the top five Preferred Provider
Organizations (PPOs) in the United States and the first PPO based in Michigan
to earn Full Accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance
(NCQA), recognized as America's leading health care accrediting organization.
The Blue Preferred Plus product is offered to auto industry customers. Blue
Cross Blue Shield of Michigan covers more auto industry employees in the state
than any other health care benefits company.
Nationally PPOs provide health care benefits to about 100 million
Americans and are the fastest growing product segment in the health care
industry. Until recently, PPOs were not part of NCQA's accreditation process,
which was only available to HMOs, point-of-service plans, managed behavioral
health care organizations and physician organizations.
"As one of the first PPO plans in the country to volunteer to undergo this
rigorous process, we show our ongoing commitment to quality improvement," said
Richard E. Whitmer, president and chief executive officer of the Michigan
Blues. "This is not something we did alone, we want to thank our partners,
the physicians, hospitals and other health care providers in Blue Preferred
Plus, for their efforts in helping us achieve this honor."
Expert NCQA surveyors reviewed Blue Preferred Plus and looked at quality
management, consumer rights and responsibilities, customer service,
utilization management, and physician and health care provider credentialing.
Another Blues product, Blue Care Network HMO, received an Excellent
Accreditation from NCQA last September. The Excellent Accreditation is the
highest level of accreditation awarded by NCQA to HMOs, which have five
 possible accreditation levels.
Founded in 1939, nonprofit Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has 4.8
million members and offers a variety of health care benefit plans, including
Traditional Blue Cross Blue Shield, Blue Preferred and Community Blue PPOs,
Blue Choice Point of Service and Blue Care Network HMO.
NCQA is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health
care quality. NCQA accredits and certifies a wide range of health care
organizations and manages the evolution of HEDIS(R), the performance
measurement tool used by more than 90 percent of the nation's health plans.
NCQA provides health care quality information in order to help consumers,
employers, and others make more informed health care choices.
