Network Associates Receives New U.S. Patent

New Patented McAfee Technology Enhances Capabilities for Data Recovery

In the Event of Damage to Various Areas on a Storage Device

Apr 11, 2001, 01:00 ET from Network Associates Inc.

    SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 11 /PRNewswire/ --
Network Associates Inc. (Nasdaq: NETA) today announced that the United States
Patent and Trademark Office has granted the company United States patent
number 6,208,999 for its technology invention for file systems within block
storage devices. The technology described in United States Patent
6,208,999, entitled "Recoverable Computer File System with a Signature Area
Containing File Integrity Information Located in the Storage Blocks," provides
desirable features and additional security for customers using virus scanning
software offered by its McAfee division.
Non-contiguous blocks are often used for storing data on a block storage
device. Network Associates' patented file system addresses the disadvantages
of traditional file systems by identifying information with file data, which
enables file recovery in the event of file system damage. The new technology
reserves space within each block corresponding to a data file for a small
signature area. The signature area contains a unique bit pattern, specifying
that the signature area is not part of the file data. The directory structure
for the storage device, including subdirectories, is maintained in a single
data structure and marked with signature areas.
This patented technology is featured in McAfee's "Safe & Sound" component,
coupled with an automatic backup engine that simultaneously creates backups of
a user's document files as they are accessed. The backed up files are stored
in a "protected volume," which implements the patented recoverable computer
file system. McAfee's Safe & Sound also includes DOS and Windows utilities to
help recover files from the protected volume.
"Clearly this is a remarkable milestone in the development of data
recovery strategies for our existing retail software package," said
Diane Seghposs, vice president for the McAfee Retail division of
Network Associates. "With this patent and our existing market presence,
McAfee will continue to define the evolving landscape of computer software."
The McAfee division of Network Associates provides comprehensive solutions
to protect e-businesses from attacks by malicious Internet applets and
viruses. The McAfee Active Virus Defense (AVD) suite is an award-winning
multi-tier virus security solution. Over the past 12 months, McAfee has
aggressively focused on the burgeoning mobile and wireless marketplace,
developing the VirusScan Thin Client (TC) and VirusScan Wireless software
solutions. All McAfee products are backed by the world's leading anti-virus
research organization, McAfee AVERT (Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team), the
team which first identified Melissa, Bubbleboy and Phage, the first wireless
virus. For more information, McAfee can be reached at 800-338-8754 or on the
