DETROIT, Nov. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Hearkening back to a time long before shopping malls existed, a group of independent Detroit small businesses have joined forces in the downtown area. A News conference will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 17. 8325 East Jefferson.
Known as The Collective, several retailers and professional service-providers recently held a grand opening in the English manor home-turned-storefront commercial building at 8325 East Jefferson Ave. near historic Indian Village. Patrons of The Collective can purchase fresh flowers, have their shoes repaired, buy unusual clothing and accessories, meet with a business development consultant, hire a professional cleaning company, and much more, all in the same building.
"The Collective returns us to the days when Indian Village was home to Detroit's movers and shakers," says Barbara Wynder, owner of White Glove Professional Cleaning. Combining entrepreneurial drive with her desire to renovate the classically built, 100-year-old tutor-style home, she established The Collective during the summer.
"The concept is much like the business incubator model, except we're doing it for ourselves and the city we love, without a 'stimulus package,'" says Wynder. "The entrepreneurs here have pooled their resources, talents, money and creativity to present their businesses and services to the community in a unique and customer-friendly way."
The location that once headquartered Planned Parenthood of Southeast Michigan's administrative offices was originally home to Detroiter James Hamilton, a wool manufacturer and president of Herreshoff Motor Co. The building had also been used as a boarding school and corporate business office, but was vacant for about three years before The Collective's arrival.
Apart from leasing space to professional retailers and companies, The Collective is open for public use, including special events and conference room space is available for hourly rentals. One of the biggest advantages that Wynder and her partners say that their new location offers is accessibility to pedestrian or bike traffic and proximity to homeowners in the neighborhoods around Detroit's busy Jefferson Avenue.
