NEW YORK and LAS VEGAS, Nov. 1, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The City of Las Vegas and EnGoPLANET, a New York City-based clean tech start-up, today announced that they successfully installed the world's first Smart Street Lights powered by pedestrians footsteps, using kinetic energy pads, and solar energy.
Traditional Street Lights are more inefficient than one would imagine. The world spends over $40 billion per year in energy cost to light streetlights, which produces over 100 million tons of CO2 per year.
The City of Las Vegas is a leader in municipal sustainability.
"We want to provide the highest service levels while also looking to the future and ensuring that we are sustainable," Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman said. "Through our LEED certified buildings, solar projects, water reclamation, alternative-fueled vehicles and sustainable streetlights, Las Vegas continues to lead the way. Las Vegas strives to be on the cutting edge of all things, and this project coincides with plans to develop an innovation district in our downtown."
Petar Mirovic, CEO of EnGoPLANET, said: "Clean and free energy is all around us. Urban cities have to build the smart infrastructures of tomorrow that will be able to harvest all that energy. This project is small, but a very important step in that direction"
Mirovic added: "EnGoPlanet Smart Street Lights are also a solution to the 1.4 billion people that do not have street lighting. Today they live in the dark. That is why we started a crowd-funding campaign on Indiegogo . We want to raise money for the project of installing our smart street lights in 10 rural areas in Africa that don't have access to electricity. We invite all individuals and companies to Join Us!"
EnGoPLANET's Smart Street Light is an off-the-grid solution, powered by combining kinetic and solar energy. Kinetic energy is harvested from pedestrians' footsteps via kinetic energy pads. When someone steps on a kinetic tile, energy is created and goes directly to a battery. EnGoPLANET aims to become a leader in the Smart Solar-Kinetic Street Lights solutions.
