Newton Interactive's Medical Director Presents at Annual ACOG Meeting

Apr 30, 2001, 01:00 ET from Newton Interactive

PENNINGTON, N.J., April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- David Toub, Medical Director of
Newton Interactive, headquartered in Pennington, is presenting an abstract at
the Annual Clinical Meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists (ACOG) in Chicago, April 28-May 2.
The abstract, "The Virtual Physician Office: Patient Use of an Internet-
Based Women's Health Forum," is based on an analysis of three years of patient
postings to the Women's Health Forum of the Philadelphia Inquirer's Web site,
http://health.philly.com. The objective of this study was to determine if
women are using Internet-based medical resources to obtain personalized
diagnostic and therapeutic advice rather than general information.
The study results showed that the majority of women who post questions to
an online women's health forum seek personalized advice and opinions, rather
than answers to questions that are applicable to a broad range of women.
"Such forums may be intended as an extension of, or substitute for,
in-person consultations with their own clinicians," said Dr. Toub.
"Physicians who moderate such forums must balance their desire to provide
detailed information against the potential for entering into a doctor-patient
 relationship in a `virtual office.'"
Dr. Toub is a board certified obstetrician/gynecologist, formerly at
Pennsylvania Hospital, who also has competencies in information technology,
quality and disease management, managed care and Internet-based healthcare
 information systems.
In addition to moderating the women's health forum for the Philadelphia
Inquirer's Web site, he is on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Medical
 Economics Magazine-Ob/Gyn Edition and Obgyn.net.
Dr. Toub has been the primary or co-author of 10 peer-reviewed clinical
papers and has also published medical articles of interest to consumers. He
has written medical content for many Newton Interactive projects, including
the Women's Health section of a consumer Web site.
Newton Interactive is an award-winning, leading provider of digital media
and technology solutions for the healthcare industry. Specializing in Web-
based technology, Newton develops Web sites, Intranets, Extranets, Web-based
training programs and CD-ROMs for major pharmaceutical and biotechnology
