Nextel Brings 105 Year Old Boston Marathon Into The New Millennium

Official Wireless Communications Provider Delivers

Revolutionary Athlete Alert Program

Apr 04, 2001, 01:00 ET from Nextel Communications, Inc.

BEDFORD, Mass., April 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Nextel Communications,
(Nasdaq: NXTL), for the fourth year will be the "Official Wireless
Communications Sponsor" of the 105th Boston Marathon, which takes place on
April 16, 2001. As part of its commitment, Nextel will introduce the Nextel
Athlete Alert Program (NAAP) which will allow individuals to follow the
progress of official race registrants along race route checkpoints through
automatic updates or alerts, via a digital cell phone, text pager or any
device with an Internet email address.
Nextel's technology is enabled through a small transponder chip the size
of a quarter affixed to the runner's shoe. Athletes run over stationary mats
that record and instantly transmit their time and bib numbers to the Boston
Athletic Association's (B.A.A.) system at the finish line, transmitted via
Nextel's wireless network. As part of the Marathon's Tracking Network, Nextel
will provide for the first time pre-registered individuals an opportunity to
send up-to-the-minute alerts when that runner passes one of four locations on
the route. Registered athletes interested in having alerts sent can register a
maximum of two wireless devices or email addresses prior to the race at
www.bostonmarathon.org or at the John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo at the
World Trade Center on April 14-15, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. EST. By
entering a runner's bib number online, individuals can also track a runner's
 progress along the race route.
For the Marathon and events surrounding this world class event, Nextel is
also supplying over 350 digital wireless phones with Nextel Direct Connect(R)
digital two-way radio service to the B.A.A. The B.A.A. will utilize Nextel's
digital wireless phones for its Elite Athlete Recovery Program and medical
team, the American Red Cross, in addition to security, media, and official
 purposes.
"We are happy to partner with Nextel for a fourth year. Through Nextel's
Athlete Alert Program and Wireless Web Services, in conjunction with
ChampionChip's technology, we will now benefit from having all split-times
automatically downloaded to B.A.A. computers at the finish line, which is
extremely crucial for this major international event," said Dave McGillivray,
Boston Marathon race director. "NAAP will allow us to instantaneously track a
runner's progress along the marathon course and to provide alerts to family
and friends for the first time."
"Nextel is proud to provide its wireless technology for the oldest and
most prestigious annual marathon in the world," said Keith Schneider, Area VP
of Sales for Nextel New England. "This Marathon is a significant landmark for
Nextel, as it merges the world of events with that of enhanced technology,
thus allowing individuals to personally track their favorite runners over the
Nextel network, and ultimately will feel more connected to this world class
 event."
