Nextel Names Jim Mooney EVP and Chief Operating Officer

    RESTON, Va., April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Nextel Communications, Inc.
 (Nasdaq:   NXTL), today announced that Jim Mooney has been named executive vice
 president and chief operating officer, effective April 16.

     As COO, Mooney will be responsible for the effective execution of Nextel's
 business plan and for all aspects of daily operations.
     Mooney brings over 20 years of senior management/leadership experience to
 his new role.  Prior to joining Nextel, Mooney spent more than 19 years with
 IBM culminating in his assignment as CFO of IBM, Americas.  In this position,
 he was responsible for over $45 billion of revenue during a period of
 significant restructuring and change within IBM.  Subsequent to his experience
 at IBM, Mooney was the SVP and CFO of BAAN Company and most recently the CEO
 of Tradeout, an Internet based business-to-business asset management company.
 Mooney's prior experience includes a track record of developing new products,
 services and distribution channels that have contributed directly to improved
 cost structure and profit growth.
     Mooney's academic background includes a Bachelors degree in Finance from
 the University of Notre Dame and a Masters in Business Administration from New
