Northwest Airlines Announces Additional Service Between Detroit and Three Cities

    DETROIT, April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Northwest Airlines (Nasdaq:   NWAC) today
 announced additional turbo-prop service to Peoria, Ill.; Alpena, Mich.; and
 Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. from its Detroit hub.
     In partnership with its Northwest Airlink affiliate Mesaba Airlines and
 effective June 1, 2001, service to Peoria will increase from one non-stop
 flight per day to three non-stops per day, all of which will be operated using
 the 34-passenger Saab 340 turbo-prop aircraft.
     Also beginning on June 1, service between Alpena, Sault Ste. Marie and
 Detroit will also be increased from three daily flights to four daily flights.

 Detroit.  "More customers from Illinois and Northern Michigan will now be able
