To manage dedicated vegetation management software platform for ROW maintenance

ST. PAUL, Minn., March 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Powel, Inc., a leading developer of software that helps utilities work smarter, today announced that Paul S. Hurysz, Jr., has joined the company as product manager for its Vegetation Management System (VMS), a component of the Powel WorkStudio® suite of mobile work management tools for planning, prioritizing and documenting vegetation maintenance.

Mr. Hurysz comes to Powel from Progress Energy Corporation, where he managed right-of-way maintenance activities for the company's southern transmission region as senior forester.

It was during his tenure at Progress Energy that Hurysz introduced technical innovations to establish cost-effective, best practices in utility vegetation management for maintaining NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) and environmental regulatory compliance.  These included geographic mapping tools and what was then a working prototype of Powel's VMS for capturing, managing and analyzing ROW maintenance data.

"Having worked with Powel in the development stages of VMS, I know first-hand the value their technology can offer to transmission utilities in terms of planning for and analyzing system reliability," said Hurysz.  "This is a great tool that eliminates guess work and paperwork redundancy for a utility so it can quickly devise sound maintenance plans and satisfy regulatory compliance with confidence.  I'm excited to be representing this unique product in our industry and contributing to its ongoing development."

Hurysz started his forestry career with Trees, Inc., (now a subsidiary of Asplundh) after graduating with a degree in Forestry and Wildlife Management from Louisiana Tech University.  He later moved to CenterPoint Energy, an electric and gas distribution utility and earned an MBA from the University of Houston Clear Lake.  He is an ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) Certified Arborist and Utility Specialist, a member of the Utility Arborist Association and is also a past president of the Florida Vegetation Management Association

Powel CEO Scott Rogers said, "We're excited to welcome Paul to the Powel team.  Paul brings a wealth of practical experience in application of technology to improve vegetation management processes.  Our current and future customers will benefit from Paul's real-life experience using our technology and his extensive domain expertise."
