Notre Dame Gets a New Look and a New Contract

The University of Notre Dame Signs Multi-Year, All-School Contract With adidas

Apr 28, 2001, 01:00 ET from adidas America

BEAVERTON, Ore., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- When Notre Dame football players
take to the field this fall, they will be sporting a new jersey created by the
adidas design team. A green shamrock and the word "Irish," both located at the
throat of the jersey, are two of the design elements added to the team's home
and away jerseys unveiled today in South Bend.
The design of the football jersey is part of a larger partnership
agreement signed earlier this week. The multi-year contract provides adidas a
complete head-to-toe deal for all of the school's 26 athletic teams.
The relationship between adidas and Notre Dame began in 1997, with adidas
providing footwear for most Notre Dame teams. However, Notre Dame was
interested in signing with one supplier for both footwear and apparel, and
adidas was looking to increase its involvement with the school. With the
signing of this new agreement, the relationship has developed into a full
 footwear and apparel partnership.
"Notre Dame is proud of its new and expanded relationship with adidas,"
stated Kevin White, Notre Dame athletic director. "By providing extraordinary
product and unparalleled attention to servicing our athletic programs, adidas
was the only choice for the University."
With this new agreement, adidas becomes the exclusive retail supplier of
the newly designed football authentic and replica jerseys, in addition to
exclusive supplier of the basketball authentic and replica jerseys and the
Notre Dame sideline authentic gear. adidas will continue to sell licensed
apparel and accessories bearing the Notre Dame trademark at retailers
nationwide. The product range will be available at retail in fall 2001.
This agreement with Notre Dame is a part of a long-term marketing plan
that centers on adidas' unique approach to sports marketing and licensed sales
support. Unlike many of its competitors that sign hundreds of schools to its
roster, the adidas-Notre Dame deal is only one of six such agreements the
company supports (Nebraska, Northwestern, Tennessee, UCLA and Arizona State).
As a result, adidas is able to offer a fully integrated sales-service and
marketing approach to each of its partners. The agreements encompass all
areas, from product creation, sports marketing promotions, brand
 communications, events and advertising.
"adidas is excited by the opportunity to take our relationship with Notre
Dame to the next level," explained Ross McMullin, President and CEO, adidas
America. "Our company has rich heritage in sport that dates back nearly a
century. Like Notre Dame, our passion for the tradition of sport is unrivaled
in our industry. We are certain that both adidas and Notre Dame will continue
to benefit from this partnership, this season and in the years to come."
Notre Dame clearly fits the adidas philosophy of partnering with the best
teams rather than the most teams. Notre Dame represents the epitome of college
athletics in America, with four of its teams (women's basketball, women's
soccer, men's fencing, baseball) already earning number one rankings in
2000-01. The latest addition to the Notre Dame trophy case came earlier this
month when the Fighting Irish women's basketball team defeated Purdue for the
 NCAA title.
adidas is a global designer, developer and marketer of athletic footwear,
apparel and accessories. Our mission is to be the best sports brand in the
world. adidas America is a subsidiary of adidas Salomon Worldwide AG, a
corporation that also includes sport brands Salomon, Taylor Made, Bonfire and
 Mavic.
