NTELOS Acquires Digital PCS Licenses in Southern and Central Pennsylvania

    WAYNESBORO, Va., April 4 /PRNewswire/ -- NTELOS Inc. (Nasdaq:   NTLO) today
 announced it has acquired certain digital personal communications services
 (PCS) radio spectrum licenses in southern and central Pennsylvania.  On
 February 21, 2001 the required approval necessary for completion of the
 exchange of spectrum licenses was obtained from the Federal Communications
 Commission.  These areas are contiguous with the Company's existing PCS
 license holdings, and encompass a population area of more than 2.5 million
 people.

 the mid-Atlantic region," said James S. Quarforth, chief executive officer of
 NTELOS.  "These licenses will enable us to expand our regional service into
 Pennsylvania," he continued.  The company now has licenses to provide digital
 PCS services in the mid-Atlantic region encompassing a population of 11
 million.  The company finished the year with more than 168,000 digital PCS
 subscribers.
     The new PCS license areas transferred to NTELOS include the Pennsylvania
 Basic Trading Areas (BTA) of Harrisburg, York-Hanover, Lancaster, Reading,
 Williamsport, State College and Johnstown, an area encompassing a population
 of 2.5 million people.  NTELOS will own 10 MHz of spectrum in each of these
 markets.  In addition NTELOS will own additional license spectrum in Altoona,
 where NTELOS currently controls a 15MHz PCS license.
     The licenses were acquired from AT&T Wireless and a related party.
 Current customers of NTELOS or AT&T Wireless will not be affected by this
 transaction.  Prior to this transaction, NTELOS held ownership interests in
 PCS licenses in a contiguous area encompassing a total population of
 approximately 8.5 million people across Virginia, West Virginia and parts of
 Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
