NTELOS Reports 1st Quarter 2001 Customer Growth

Monthly PCS Subscriber Churn Reduced by More than 1%

New Quarterly Record for PCS Gross Additions

PCS Continues Strong Post-Pay Customer Growth

Apr 10, 2001, 01:00 ET from NTELOS Inc.

WAYNESBORO, Va., April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- NTELOS Inc. (Nasdaq: NTLO) today
reported customer growth for the first quarter 2001. PCS subscriber growth
totaled 17,637 for the quarter, up 65% from 10,719 in fourth quarter 2000,
bringing the total PCS customer base to 186,073. More than 72% of total net
additions were higher-value, contracted, post-pay customers. Gross additions
set a new quarterly record at 41,137, compared to 37,744 in the previous
quarter. Across all markets, 50% of the gross additions were sold on
"nNetwork" rate plans, with 41% on "nTown" and 9% on "nRegion" plans. Monthly
blended subscriber churn for all markets was 4.45% (3.16% post-pay and 6.79%
pre-pay), down 115 basis points from the fourth quarter 2000 rate of 5.60%.
These results reflect the first full quarter of operation under the company's
new rate plans, introduced in November 2000.
"The new record for quarterly gross additions indicates a broad acceptance
of our rate plans in the market and that we continue to compete well against
the offerings of national service providers," said James S. Quarforth, CEO.
"This gross addition achievement is particularly pleasing given our focus on
adding post-pay customers, rather than driving the total with pre-pay
additions. The strength of our gross additions combined with early success of
our new retention efforts is resulting in significant net gains."
Gross additions in Virginia East were 22,812 for the quarter compared to
16,788 in fourth quarter 2000, an increase of 36%. "nTown" plans represented
52% of gross additions in Virginia East with "nNetwork" at 41% and "nRegion"
at 7%. First quarter 2001 net additions for Virginia East totaled 8,945 and
 6,162, or 69%, of these were post-pay customers -- a significant improvement
from previous quarters. Additionally, 2,889 subscribers in the Virginia East
markets were converted from pre-pay to post-pay rate plans. Monthly blended
subscriber churn for Virginia East was 5.05% compared to 6.68% in fourth
quarter 2000; Over the same period, post-pay churn improved from 3.91% in the
 fourth quarter to 3.16%.
"We are especially pleased with the performance of the Virginia East
markets which we acquired last July," said Quarforth. "Over 8,900 customers
were added in Richmond and Hampton Roads, which is more than were added the
entire year of 2000. Post-pay net additions for the quarter in Virginia East
were greater than all of 1999 and 2000 combined."
The combined Virginia West and West Virginia operational areas showed
solid first quarter growth with 18,325 gross additions. The "nNetwork" plans
dominated at 59% of gross additions, with "nTown" plans at 29% and "nRegion"
plans at 12%. Net additions for the quarter were 8,692. Monthly blended
subscriber churn for Virginia West and West Virginia was 3.80%, down from
4.33% in fourth quarter 2000; Post-pay churn in these markets improved to
3.15% from 3.59% the previous quarter.
In the wireline segments, CLEC posted a net gain for the quarter of 2,163.
The merger with R&B Communications was closed on February 13, 2001. R&B
Communications reported a CLEC customer gain of 1,030 for the quarter for a
pro-forma net gain of 3,193. Internet grew by 2,453 dial-up subscribers
during the first quarter and DSL achieved an increase of 391 or 24%, both
including R&B customer growth. ILEC finished the quarter at a pro forma total
 of 51,823.
