NYK Line Uses BEA WebLogic E-Business Platform to Streamline Shipping Processes for World's Largest Cargo Fleet

Global Freight Carrier Accelerates Cargo Transactions From Days to Minutes,

Speeding Both Product Delivery and Cash Flow at 300 Ports on Six Continents

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 23 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ --
BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), one of the world's leading e-business
infrastructure software companies, today announced that Tokyo-based Nippon
Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line), a worldwide leader in transoceanic shipping, is using
BEA WebLogic(R) Server, the #1 Java Web application server in the world, to
accelerate its shipping of products by simplifying the administrative
processes required to settle international cargo shipment transactions.
The most crucial and fundamental of these administrative functions is the
bill of lading, a legal document that serves as both proof of delivery and
transference of ownership of cargo. Until this document is processed,
critical invoicing and inventory procedures cannot be completed. Tracking and
managing bills of lading have been among the most time-intensive
responsibilities for NYK Line -- which, serving nearly 300 seaports on six
continents, operates the world's largest cargo fleet -- and its thousands of
 customers.

BEA Software Turns Bills of Lading into Near Real-Time Events
"Bills of lading have essentially remained unchanged for hundreds of
years," said Pat Contardo, Director of Technology Coordination at NYK Line.
"Paperwork is generated by the shipper. It's confirmed and signed by the
carrier, and then sent back to the shipper. Using traditional mail service,
this process could take several days. This slow process is unacceptable in
today's hypercompetitive marketplace. BEA is helping us transform this
antiquated system into a near real-time event, saving countless person hours
and reducing the possibility of lost or error-plagued paperwork."
NYK is using BEA WebLogic Server to Web-enable its bill of lading system,
reducing processing time from days, or even weeks, down to minutes, and
streamlining payment processing. The deployment of the BEA WebLogic
Server-based application has become an important service differentiator for
NYK, adding customer value by reducing the administrative burden of the bill
of lading while improving cash flow and other accounting functions.

BEA Software Speeds Deployment, Adds Flexibility
Cambridge Technology Partners, a BEA systems integrator (SI) partner,
worked onsite with NYK to define, architect and implement the new system. NYK
was able to take its new bill of lading application from design to
implementation in just five months, meeting management's aggressive rollout
schedule. BEA WebLogic Server addressed the underlying complexities of
e-business transaction processing and provided a framework to enable
third-party integration and back-end interoperability, allowing NYK and
Cambridge to focus on application-specific coding and deployment.
With the successful implementation of the bill of lading system complete,
NYK and Cambridge are planning additional applications for BEA WebLogic Server
and the extended BEA WebLogic E-Business Platform(TM). Future applications
are expected to include order entry for the extremely complex shipments that
NYK handles, along with freight management and personalization options for
 NYK's repeat customers.
"BEA software has established itself as a de facto standard e-business
platform used by many of the world's largest companies, such as NYK, with an
open, standards-based foundation," said John Kiger, Director of Product
Marketing for the E-Commerce Server Division at BEA. "We want our customers
to devote their resources to developing differentiated e-services that help
them compete and win. Our role is to make sure they have an unfailing,
high-performance, flexible platform that can deliver those services anytime,
anywhere, to any type of computing device."
"As we reviewed and compared several platforms, BEA's robust support for
Java technologies was particularly compelling, as was its field-proven high
availability," said Bala Annadorai, Program Architect at Cambridge Technology
Partners. "Java enables NYK to implement 'future-proof,' readily adaptable
systems with longer lifetimes, and to bring new features online very quickly.
BEA is second to none in its Java support. And WebLogic's powerful clustering
capabilities help ensure superior application uptime and transaction
 integrity."
