OfficeMax Promotes 22 Executives to Positions of Increased Responsibility

    CLEVELAND, April 11 /PRNewswire/ -- OfficeMax, Inc. (NYSE:   OMX) today
 announced that as a result of its Company-wide annual performance review
 evaluations 22 executives have been promoted to positions of greater
 responsibility across virtually all areas of the Company.
     Michael Feuer, the Company's chairman and chief executive officer, said,
 "These promotions strengthen the OfficeMax management team and will support
 the continued execution of our strategic initiatives. I am also particularly
 proud of the Company's ability to nurture talent from within and provide
 meaningful growth opportunities for these key members of our organization."
     The OfficeMax officer promotions include:
 
     Ross Pollock to the newly created position of Executive Vice President,
 General Counsel and Secretary from Senior Vice President.  Mr. Pollock joined
 OfficeMax over four years ago as Vice President, General Counsel, and has
 played an integral role in virtually every aspect of the business.  Mr.
 Pollock reports directly to Mr. Feuer and is a member of the Company's
 Executive Committee.
 
     Daniel Haight to Senior Vice President, Product Development and Operations
 for OfficeMax.com/Direct from Vice President. Mr. Haight joined OfficeMax last
 year and is responsible for the Company's OfficeMax.com/Direct operations
 including direct marketing, merchandising and business services integration.
 
     Vance Johnston to Senior Vice President, Corporate Strategy & Operations
 Development from Vice President.  Mr. Johnston has been with OfficeMax for
 nearly two years as one of the strategic architects of the Company's
 "MaxProcess" initiatives, which are collectively designed to improve key
 aspects of the OfficeMax operating model.
 
     Michael Tilton to Senior Vice President, Treasurer from Vice President.
 Joining the Company in 1998, Mr. Tilton was instrumental in developing the
 Company's tax strategy in his first position as Vice President, Tax. Since
 then he has taken on broader responsibility, including the treasury function
 and serving on the OfficeMax Real Estate and International Committees.
 
     Michael "Barth" Weisbarth to Senior Vice President, Corporate Controller
 and Chief Accounting Officer from Vice President, Budgeting and Reporting. Mr.
 Weisbarth, a CPA, joined the Company over five years ago and has served in a
 number of key financial areas of the business, including Director of Financial
 Budgeting & Planning and Vice President, Investor Relations & Corporate
 Communications.
 
     David Cochran to Vice President, Assistant Controller from Divisional Vice
 President. Mr. Cochran, a CPA and CIA, is a five-year veteran of OfficeMax. He
 initially headed up the Company's internal audit area and has since managed a
 number of other critical accounting/finance operations.
 
     James Criswell to Vice President, Assistant Treasurer from a Divisional
 Vice President of Accounting. Mr. Criswell is responsible for a number of
 critical accounting/finance functions including capital appropriations and
 international accounting. He has been with the Company for four years and
 interacts with virtually every member of senior management.
 
     Phillip DePaul to Vice President, Assistant Controller from Divisional
 Vice President, Budgeting and Planning. Mr. DePaul is responsible for key
 aspects of the Company's financial planning and reporting. Mr. DePaul, a CPA,
 joined the Company in 1998.
 
     Karl Dixon to Vice President, Store Operations from Divisional Vice
 President. Starting with the Company as a District Field Store Manager in
 1994, Mr. Dixon has held numerous positions of increasing responsibility
 within the OfficeMax store operations group.
 
     Michelle Farmer to Vice President, Finance and Administration for
 OfficeMax.com/Direct from Divisional Vice President. Ms. Farmer, who joined
 the Company in 1996, is responsible for the accounting, financial and
 administrative functions of the Company's OfficeMax.com/Direct operations.
 
     Jack Murphy to Vice President, International Operations from Divisional
 Vice President, Asia Operations. Joining the Company in 1994, Mr. Murphy will
 be in charge of operations in South America and Mexico.
