PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 17, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Star Academy Program came along at just the right time, according to Olympia Learning Center's Nathan White. The program helped many Richland County (Columbia, S.C.) School District students get back on track toward graduation.
For its achievements, the Olympia Learning Center Star Academy was recognized on November 16, 2010, as a recipient of the National Dropout Prevention Network's Crystal Star Award of Excellence in Dropout Recovery, Intervention, and Prevention.
"It's a win for every student who attends Olympia Learning Center because they bought into the dream that they could be successful," White said. "It's a win for our school district and our board of commissioners who believe that there are no expendable children. It's a win for our entire state and nation when we can look a child in the eye and tell them truthfully that there is a place for every child to be educated, no matter what."
For years, Olympia has attempted to remove the negative stigma associated with its purpose as an alternative school. By building relationships and providing opportunities for change, Olympia has come a long way toward removal of the negative stereotype. The Star Academy, which is designed to advance overage eighth graders to the 10th grade in one academic year, gave students an opportunity to change their behavior, academic performance, and social etiquette.
"We know that most of the students who are overage in middle school have just about given up, even those students who have the potential to do well in school if other options were available," said White, who accepted the Crystal Star Award at the NDPN Conference in Philadelphia, Pa. "The Star Academy came right on time for Olympia Learning Center because the middle school students we were receiving came to us already defeated. Once the academy became an option, you could see the enthusiasm rise, and hope became a viable option."
