One Million Dollars Every Five Seconds: Libertarians Protest Income Tax

Apr 16, 2001, 01:00 ET from Libertarian Party of Florida

ORLANDO, Fla., April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Libertarian Party activists at
nine post offices around the state of Florida will briefly attempt to match
the pace of U.S. Federal Government spending by handing out a million dollars
worth of mock money every five seconds. The purpose of this event is to
dramatize the vast amount of federal spending and call attention to the
Libertarian Party's proposals to cut spending and abolish the income tax and
 the IRS.
"On average, the federal government spends over one million dollars every
five seconds, eight hours a day, every weekday, every week of the year,"
according to Charles Champion, a Libertarian Party activist participating in
 the event in Orlando.
"We'll be giving out the mock money on April 16th at post offices crowded
with people trying to file their income tax returns at the last minute,"
Champion explained. "Last year we did a protest like this, and the reaction
was incredible. People were shouting and cheering and blowing car horns when
they saw our signs calling for abolishing the IRS."
The Florida effort is part of a nationwide protest against the income tax
 by the Libertarian Party.
The Libertarian Party is the third largest political party in America.
More than 3.3 million votes were cast for Libertarian candidates for state and
federal office in 2000 (more than for any other third party), and about 380
Libertarians serve in public office across the country.
