ParaSoft Releases New Upgrade of C++Test

Improved Exception Handling, More Intuitive Interface And

Instinctive Default Settings Enhance Usability

Apr 30, 2001, 01:00 ET from ParaSoft Corporation

MONROVIA, Calif., April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- ParaSoft, leading provider of
error prevention and error detection tools, announced today the release of
C++Test v1.2, their automatic unit-testing tool for C/C++ developers. This
new version responds to customer feedback by providing a more flexible and
convenient testing environment. Improved exception handling, customizable
object initialization options and a new test case editor and test result
viewer add to the increased functionality in this latest version.
Testing at the function or class level (a.k.a. "unit testing") minimizes
overall debugging time and increases developers' confidence in the product
they produce, resulting in more efficient and error-free software. As noted
author of numerous books on software testing Dr. Boris Beizer once wrote, "The
most notorious bugs in the history of software development were all unit bugs
-- bugs that would have been found by proper unit testing."(1) He cited the
Voyager bug that sent the probe into the sun, the AT&T and the DCS bugs that
each rendered 1/3 of US telephones inoperable, and the Intel Pentium Chip bug
among the examples of software bugs that could have been avoided with thorough
 unit testing.
Automating unit testing saves time and increases efficiency. C++Test
automatically checks C/C++ functions and classes for structural integrity,
adherence to specifications, and performs regression testing to insure that as
bugs are being repaired, new ones aren't introduced in the process. C++Test
builds test harnesses and stubs, then automatically writes and executes test
cases -- tasks that, if performed manually, make unit testing a time-intensive
 and unrealistic endeavor for developers.
The latest version now provides complete exception information including a
description of the exception, what caused it, and a stack trace of the
location. Additionally, while initializing an object, developers now have the
option of using the default constructor or a customized one, allowing them to
initialize objects to a specific state before testing. As another new
benefit, the new test case editor has a modified user interface that now makes
test case editing and result viewing more intuitive for Windows-based
 developers.
"Feedback from our customers indicated that while our product was a
forerunner in terms of functionality and technical ability, there were some
user-based areas that could be improved," said Thomas Chen, ParaSoft's Vice
President of Development Tools. "As a company, ParaSoft appreciates that
input and, as with this upgrade to C++Test, uses that data to make
improvements that will further enhance the value of our tools for developers."
ParaSoft strives to make the testing process as user-friendly as possible
by automating the testing process for each stage of development and developing
insightful tools for developers to use. As C++Test customer Robert Luppold of
Luppold & Associates said, "All of ParaSoft's C and C++ development tools are
extremely easy to use. The user manuals are quite informative and the
graphical user interface provides an intuitive mechanism for retrieving
 pertinent debugging information."

     Availability and Pricing
C++Test v1.2 is available for Windows NT and 2000 and will soon be
available for Linux and Solaris. C++Test pricing starts at $2,495 for a
machine locked, single-user license. Floating licenses are also available.
