Patient Falls Decline at Client Hospital After Implementation of Patient-Safety Software, Reports Safety-Centered Solutions

TAMPA, Fla., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Patient falls are on the decline at
Sacred Heart Medical Center (SHMC), Spokane, WA, partly due to the
implementation of "Excalibur Patient Safety Net(TM)," patient safety software
from Safety Centered Solutions, Inc. (SCS). Using Excalibur Patient Safety
Net, SHMC is able to identify trends and patterns, track and trend specific
data related to patient falls, and determine which patients are at the
greatest risk for falls. Data from the patient safety software now shows a
downward trend in the number of patient falls occurring in the hospital.
"By establishing a culture change and increasing reporting to collect more
complete data, we've been able to significantly decrease the number of patient
falls occurring in our hospital," said Sharon Skinner, Clinical Analyst, Risk
Management, SHMC. "We're proud of what we've accomplished to improve patient
safety and anticipate even greater changes in the future."
On a fully automated basis, SHMC enters data such as patient age,
admitting diagnosis, length of stay, discharge diagnosis, and discharge
disposition into Excalibur Patient Safety Net. The software system uses the
information to generate graphical reports. These reports reveal trends and
patterns and allow the hospital to establish guidelines to reduce the number
 of patient falls.
"SHMC chose SCS' patient-safety system because it provides the data and
educational services sought by their Patient Falls Task Force to remediate
these events," said David S. Spencer, CEO, SCS. "Excalibur Patient Safety Net
facilitates the collection of data on patient falls, while we educate clients
on the importance of creating a blame-free culture and putting the focus where
it needs to be-patient safety. Together, these programs have helped SHMC to
determine the location, type, and causes of patient falls, leading them to
establish methods to prevent patient falls in the future."
SCS' "Safety-Centered Care(TM)" program combines software and
comprehensive education and leadership training to improve patient safety by
reducing medical errors. Integral components of the Safety-Centered Care
program include Excalibur Patient Safety Net(TM), which measures and tracks
both the incidence and costs of hospital-based medical errors in more than
1,500 aspects of care; and the "Patient Safety Desk Reference," a standard
classification and coding taxonomy enabling the categorization and study of
 patterns behind these errors.
