Award Winners Recognized for Contributions to Job Creation

And Economic Development

Apr 18, 2001, 01:00 ET from Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development

    HARRISBURG, Pa., April 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and
 six Pennsylvania business journals today announced the winners of
 Pennsylvania's sixth annual Best 50 Women in Business awards.
     Created by Gov. Ridge in 1996, the awards recognize the significant
 contributions women make to Pennsylvania's economy. The Ridge Administration
 will honor this year's 50 winners during an awards reception on Thursday,
 May 24, at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center.
     "There are more than 2.7 million women employed in Pennsylvania," Gov.
 Ridge said. "Many of these talented individuals are business owners,
 partners, chief executive officers and senior managers who are critical to the
 job creation, economic development and ever-improving quality of life in
 Pennsylvania.
     "It is a great honor for me to join Pennsylvania's six business journals
 in acknowledging the personal and professional achievements of this year's
 Best 50 Women in Business. Their extraordinary contributions are indeed
 deserving of recognition and admiration."
     An independent panel of judges selected the 50 winners from more than
 200 nominations based on biographical information, professional and personal
 accomplishments, community involvement, and advocacy for women in business.
     To qualify, a nominee had to meet the following criteria:

     -- Must be a female resident of Pennsylvania, or be employed in the
         state;
     -- Must be self-nominated or nominated by another person;
     -- Must be an owner, partner, president, chief executive officer, board
         chair, senior executive or a woman with significant authority for
         decision making in a business or company;
     -- Could not be a member of the judges' panel or a member of a judge's
         immediate family; and
     -- Must not represent a nonprofit organization, or be an elected
         official, member of the judiciary or political appointee.

     "Women's involvement in business was one of the most important factors in
 changing the face of business in the last century," said David A.
 Schankweiler, publisher of the Central Penn Business Journal. "Women play a
 key role in the continuing business growth and prosperity in Pennsylvania and,
 on behalf of our state's business journals, we are proud to honor them."
     Winners will be highlighted in a special newspaper supplement in June,
 which will be included in the state's six business journals: Central Penn
 Business Journal; Eastern Pennsylvania Business Journal; Northeast
 Pennsylvania Business Journal; Philadelphia Business Journal; Pittsburgh
 Business Times; and Pennsylvania Business Central.
