Perfect Paddling Conditions in Healdsburg, California for the Next 5 to 6 Weeks

For the first time ever, authorities release extra flow down the Russian River to aid salmon migration, giving Sonoma Wine Country waterways unprecedented conditions for water sports this fall

HEALDSBURG, Calif., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The City of Healdsburg announced today that the Russian River is experiencing ideal conditions for kayaking and canoeing due to Sonoma County Water Agency's unprecedented release of water flow from Lake Mendocino. The increased water flow, though designed to prepare the over saturated lake for this season's rainfall and aid Chinook salmon migration, has also fostered the river's best paddling conditions, never before seen this time of year. With daytime temperatures expected to remain above 70 degrees for the next month, Healdsburg welcomes water enthusiasts to take advantage of this rare opportunity.

"We haven't seen such optimal fall conditions ever," said Lollie Mercer, owner of River's Edge Kayak and Canoe in Healdsburg, the largest excursion service on the west coast. "Still great for beginners, these water levels will let boats glide all the way down the river – with no shallow spots. It's like summer just started."

Last week, Sonoma County Water Agency and the Army Corps of Engineers released enough water from Lake Mendocino's Coyote Dam to double the Russian River's flow, from about 150 cubic feet per second to over 325.  Conditions are expected to remain ideal through mid November, when rains set in.  The increased river flow also signals to Chinook salmon, a threatened species, that it's time to return to their protected spawning grounds in Healdsburg and Dry Creek.
