PGT Industries Partners With 'Fortified Florida' Project in Pasco County

Apr 25, 2001, 01:00 ET from PGT Industries

VENICE, Fla., April 25 /PRNewswire/ -- PGT Industries, in partnership with
the Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), First Floridian Auto and Home
Insurance Company, Pasco Building Association and Image Custom Homes, will
build Pasco County's first home in the "Fortified Florida" program.
"Fortified Florida" is a new home construction program sponsored by IBHS, a
non-profit initiative of the insurance industry to reduce property damage,
economic loss and human suffering caused by natural disasters.
PGT's WinGuard(TM) impact-resistant windows and doors will be featured in
the home which will offer options for protection that go beyond what is
required by current local building codes. The new Florida building code
addresses some of the same areas as the "Fortified" standards, such as window
protection. But while the new code varies by geographic area, "Fortified"
 standards are uniform throughout state.
"PGT is pleased to be part of this very important educational project. Our
first partnership with IBHS was the Pinellas County three-home demonstration
project last fall. This was an excellent educational opportunity for both
builders and consumers to learn more about the benefits of impact-resistant
glass," said Julie Heinsman, VP, Marketing for PGT. "The WinGuard product
line was developed out of the learning from Hurricane Andrew in 1992 (it is
the only complete line of windows and doors that meet and exceed Miami-Dade
construction codes, the strictest in the nation). We are fully prepared to
provide builders with products that already meet Florida's new building code."
PGT is Florida's leading manufacturer of custom windows, doors and patio
rooms. The company, now in its 21st year, is privately held and employs over
1000 at its corporate headquarters and manufacturing facility in Venice,
Florida. Sales were $120 million in 2000. PGT's product line includes PGT(R)
aluminum and vinyl windows and doors; WinGuard(TM) impact-resistant windows
and doors; NatureScape(R) patio rooms; and Eze-Breeze(TM) sliding panels.
First Floridian Auto and Home Insurance Company (www.firstfloridian.com),
a wholly owned subsidiary of Travelers Insurance, is a leading insurer of
automobile and homeowners policies in Florida. Travelers Insurance
(www.travelers.com), a member of Citigroup (NYSE: C), is a leading provider of
a full range of insurance products.
