LAS VEGAS, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Philips Semiconductors, a division of
Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG), and SoftConnex Technologies, Inc. today
announced an integrated USB host solution, combining SoftConnex's Universal
Serial Bus (USB) USBLink host software with Philips Semiconductors'
single-chip USB host and interface controller, the ISP1161/2. When taken
together, the combined solution offers the most comprehensive USB host
solution available for the embedded OEM market.
The new integrated USB host solution provides OEMs with complete hardware,
software and intellectual property for advanced digital consumer applications,
such as Internet appliances, PDAs, set-top-boxes and digital audio players.
Philips Semiconductors' single-chip ISP1161/2 allows simultaneous operation
for both host and interface functions, while the SoftConnex USBLink software's
embedded host drivers for the ISP1161/2 support a range of operating systems,
including ITRON, Linux, MS-DOS, Nucleus, PowerTV, SMX, ThreadX and VxWorks.
"SoftConnex's USBLink software and Philips Semiconductors' USB host and
interface device controller create a one-stop solution for USB host
applications on embedded systems such as digital set-top boxes, MP3 players
and digital still cameras," said Tee Chee Yen, Philips Semiconductors
Technical Marketing Manager. "We worked closely with SoftConnex to provide a
complete solution that is easy to implement."
"Given Philips Semiconductors' leadership in the USB silicon market,
SoftConnex is very pleased to provide integrated software support for its
latest USB host controller," said Robert Lowe, President of SoftConnex. "OEMs
are increasingly looking for this kind of end to end solution that reduces
time to market and simplifies the product development cycles."
The Philips Semiconductors/SoftConnex solution eliminates the need for
customers to develop their own USB software, as it provides OEMs with the main
stack and several built-in class drivers. The combination of the ISP1161/2 and
USBLink enables embedded host devices such as set-top boxes, internet
appliances, digital music jukeboxes, game consoles and PDAs to communicate
with external USB peripherals such as keyboards, mice, printers, mass storage
and audio devices, digital still cameras and MP3 players.
The ISP1161/2 is a single-chip, integrated host controller and device
controller, that can manage both host and controller applications
independently and simultaneously through external CPU control. For more
information on the ISP1161/2 and the USB host solution hardware, please visit

SoftConnex's USBLink is comprised of the USB stack and a class driver
framework. The stack is responsible for driving USB 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0
controllers. All USB protocols are supported, as are complex USB devices that
contain multiple configurations/interfaces and alternate settings. For more
