Pierce and Prionics Announce Collaboration on the Development and Manufacture Of a Faster Test for BSE (Mad Cow Disease) Analysis

Apr 25, 2001, 01:00 ET from Pierce Chemical Company

ROCKFORD, Ill., April 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Pierce Chemical Company, a Perbio
Science Bioresearch Division Company, and Zurich-based Prionics AG, the leader
in prion diagnostics, today announced a collaboration whereby Pierce will
manufacture a new test for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), also known
as mad cow disease. The new test, which will use a microplate-based format,
will take advantage of Prionics expertise in prion diagnostics and Pierce
expertise in assay development and immunoassay production.

"Pierce has the experience and technology necessary to manufacture and
assemble a test that produces superior results," said Dr. Bruno Oesch, a prion
expert and one of the three cofounders of Prionics. "The high quality of the
Pierce kit components and the company's commitment to quality assurance will
maintain our company's reputation for supplying the most reliable BSE test
available. The new format will enable our customers to perform a greater
number of tests more quickly than they can with the original Prionics(R)-Check
 Western blot test."
"We're proud to play a key role in this new Prionics test kit," explained
Mats Fischier, president and CEO of Perbio Science AB. "Being headquartered in
Sweden, we're extremely sensitive to the European Union (EU) need for a
quicker, higher capacity test for mad cow disease. This is especially
important because the EU has mandated BSE testing of beef livestock over 30
months of age. Based upon industry estimates, approximately 9 million cattle
will need to be tested this year. We look forward to continuing this
relationship with Prionics and to providing additional products that can
further improve the speed for these tests."
"Pierce is excited to partner with Prionics, the market leader in test
systems for BSE, to play a role in assuring a safe food supply," said Robb
Anderson, president of the Perbio Science Bioresearch Division. "It is our
hope that this faster test kit will enable laboratory technicians to process
more samples at greater speed, helping to expedite diagnosis of infected
 cattle.""
Prionics signed a distribution agreement with Roche Diagnostics on
Jan. 24, 2001, whereby its business unit Roche Molecular Biochemicals
distributes Prionics kits in most countries throughout the world. Oesch says
Roche will distribute the new kit assuring Prionics, Pierce and BSE test
laboratories of global distribution and strong technical support. Prionics
anticipates this kit will be available in third quarter 2001.
